The annual Consumer Electronics Show, which overtakes Las Vegas each January, is known worldwide for showcasing some of the most innovative and forward-thinking technologies around. Before the show gets underway, judges review submissions for the Best of Innovation Award and announce a winner in each of the 26 categories, including Tech for a Better World, 3D Printing, Embedded Technologies, Smart Home and Wearable Technologies, to name a few. We chose ten of those categories to feature in this week's Tasty Tech Eye Candy of the Week. If you want to see the full list, click here.

1. Fitness, Sports and Biotech

Adidas' Smart Ball won in the category of Fitness, Sports and Biotech. The soccer ball has embedded sensors that detect speed, spin, flight path and impact point. A wireless connection delivers the collected data to a computer program, where it's displayed for analysis.

2. 3d Printing

This handheld scanner from Fuel 3D is capable of capturing high-resolution, three-dimensional shapes and colours of a variety of objects, from faces to flowers. The files can be used to 3-D print those objects.

3. Software and Mobile Apps

Basketball fans can pair 94Fifty Smart Sensor Basketball Glassware with Google's Glass to grab real-time motion analysis. The software and app measures motor skills, provides visual and audio shot feedback in real time, learns the strengths and weaknesses of players at any level, and adapts as the player improves.

4. Wireless Handset Accessories

The handy Align glucose meter from iHealth Lab makes it easy to test one's blood-sugar levels. A user inserts the teardrop-shaped meter into the headphone jack of a smartphone. Next, she inserts a test strip into the meter. Finally, she uses a lancer to prick her finger. After applying the blood sample to the absorbent hole on the tip of the test strip, the user will see test results instantly displayed on the phone app. The information can be managed, tracked and shared with caregivers and doctors.

5. Tech For a Better World

We loved Edyn's Garden Sensor back in June when we first saw it. The smart gardening system - comprised of a sensor, water valve and app - monitors light, humidity, temperature, soil nutrition and moisture. An automatic watering device sprinkles the right amount of H2O and everything can be watched via an app.

6. Smart Home

This indoor/outdoor LED lamp by Sengled does more than illuminate. It also works as a security device. A 720p HD camera, microphone and speaker provide voice as well as motion activation and software allows facial and activity recognition for security purposes. Users can record and playback activity remotely. [Sengleld website]

7. Embedded Technologies

Another innovation for home security comes from Amaryllo. The iCam HD Pro is a home security video camera that provides a 360-degree view and allows users to track objects remotely.

8. Portable Power

Wireless power is getting more powerful. The WiPower from Qualcomm lets users charge several wireless devices, including phones, keyboards, mice, lamps, and digital photo frames simultaneously and in one location.

9. Accessible Technologies

Touted as the world's smallest eye tracker, the Eye Tribe Tracker uses a USB 3.0 port to connect with electronic devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops and televisions. The inexpensive device (under US$100) can be paired with software for a range of applications, from website analysis to gaming.

10. Wearable Technologies

The Sproutling is a wearable monitor for babies. It's designed to sense a baby's sleeping patterns, learn from them and provide information for optimal rest conditions. When baby sleeps better, so does mom and dad.
