10 Astounding Facts About Extremely Low Temperatures

Over the past 150 years, scientists have developed a number of methods for reaching extremely low temperatures. Fluids like liquid nitrogen and liquid helium, both of which have significantly low boiling points, have been put to use across numerous fields. More recently, laser cooling techniques have also been deployed.

These methods have given rise to all kinds of supercool new discoveries and inventions. From a levitating magnetic railway system and ultrasmooth novelty ice cream to state-of-the-art medical scanners, lunar cold traps, and so much more, extreme cold is proving essential for the next wave of scientific developments.

10. Superconductors And Levitating Trains

In 1911, when scientists were first experimenting with extreme cooling techniques, Dutch physicist Heike Kamerlingh Onnes discovered something remarkable about the way that certain materials conduct electricity. He observed that simple elements like mercury can conduct electricity with zero resistance once the temperature drops below a specific threshold.

At low temperatures, these materials become perfect conductors of electricity - hence the name “superconductors.” In a closed loop of superconducting material, an electrical current would be able to flow around forever without losing any energy.

Superconductors become even more intriguing once you place one on top of a strong magnet. The strong magnetic field causes an internal magnetism to be induced in the superconductor, which is then repelled by the magnet underneath. This magnetic repulsion results in the superconductor defying gravity and floating in midair like a miniature hoverboard.

Japanese engineers have even built a railway system that runs on this exact principle. The SC Maglev trains - short for “superconducting magnetic levitation” - have superconducting magnets instead of wheels. They are cooled using tanks of liquid helium and levitate 10 centimeters (4 in) above a long magnetic track. In April 2015, the high-speed L0 Series SC Maglev train set a world record for rail travel of 603 kilometers per hour (375 mph) at a test track near Mount Fuji.

Currently, all known superconductors will only operate in extreme cold, which means they have a fairly limited range of uses. Even the most complex superconducting materials like yttrium barium copper oxide lose their superconductivity once the temperature rises above -173 degrees Celsius (-279 °F). The challenge now facing scientists is to find a way of retaining these superconductive properties at room temperature.

9. Magnetic Resonance Imaging


Liquid helium is a vital component for operating magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners - the non-intrusive imaging technology that allows medical professionals to see inside patients’ bodies. Coils of metal wire inside the scanner are doused repeatedly in the ultracold fluid to minimize their electrical resistance. These wires generate a strong magnetic field up to 40,000 times greater than the field of the Earth.

There is a problem with this current setup: We are running low on helium. The substance is in worryingly short supply with no known way to manufacture any more. The average scanner requires 1,700 liters (449 gal) of liquid helium to cool the magnetic coils to a chilling -269 degrees Celsius (-452 °F).

8. Bose-Einstein Condensates

Low temperatures can cause some seriously strange behavior in gases. Typically, the atoms in a gas are constantly moving - whizzing around at high speed, bouncing off the walls of the container, and colliding with one another. If that gas is then heated up, the motion of the atoms will become even more energetic and frenetic.

However, when certain gases are cooled to extremely low temperatures - around -273 degrees Celsius (-460 °F) - the individual atoms start to drastically lose their energy. Eventually, when the atoms are unable to lose any more energy, they form an exotic type of matter known as a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC).

One of the most bizarre and brilliant properties of BECs is their ability to slow down and stop light. Danish physicist Lene Hau used this principle to slow down a laser beam from light speed to around 17 meters per second (56 ft/sec) - a reduction of over 17 million percent.

Hau and her team went on to develop a technique for storing individual pulses of light within BECs. These incredible breakthroughs could pave the way for new methods of data storage, particularly in quantum computers.

Although Albert Einstein and Satyendra Nath Bose first came up with the idea in the 1920s, it wasn’t until 70 years later that the first BEC was actually made. This was achieved in 1995 when American physicists Eric Cornell and Carl Wieman successfully cooled a gas of rubidium atoms to 170 nK - over a million times colder than outer space.

For their momentous contribution to scientific research, the pair - along with MIT professor Wolfgang Ketterle - was awarded the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics.

7. Cryotherapy


Cryotherapy is a blanket term that refers to the use of low temperatures in medical treatments. More often than not, subzero chemicals are applied using a specialized cryoprobe to remove abnormal tissue cells. This includes everything from freezing off an unsightly wart to the destruction of a cancerous tumor.

Some proponents of cryotherapy claim that it has a plethora of other fantastical uses. They say that immersing yourself in a booth colder than -100 degrees Celsius (-148 °F) can prevent dementia, reduce depression, and even help you lose weight. But the evidence for this is spurious.

6. Craters On The Moon

The coldest-known place in the solar system is a lot closer to home than you might imagine. It was originally believed to be the surface of Pluto. But in 2009, scientists discovered craters around the Moon’s south pole that can drop as low as -248 degrees Celsius (-414 °F) during winter. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter made the discovery by measuring radiation levels from 50 kilometers (31 mi) above the Moon’s surface.

The coldest temperatures are found inside lunar crevices that are permanently cast in shadow, meaning they never receive any sunlight. These subzero craters act as “cold traps,” capturing elements and volatile gases that can be analyzed to map out an archive of activity on the Moon. For instance, minerals identified in Cabeus - a 98-kilometer (61 mi) crater close to the south pole - suggest a history of comet strikes.

That being said, the surface of the Moon is not always extremely cold. In fact, the temperature varies drastically depending on time and position. The equator around midday is so hot that it could boil water, whereas the poles are nearly as cold as liquid oxygen overnight.

5. Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream


Regular ice cream is made using specialized commercial freezers that churn milk, cream, and sugar together into a smooth, delicious blend. However, some producers like to do things a little differently. They have started to experiment by adding ultracold chemicals into the mix. Ice cream production can be a lengthy process, but by using liquid nitrogen, manufacturers can churn out batch after batch in a matter of minutes.

One of the key challenges for ice cream producers is to ensure that the mixture is frozen as quickly as possible. When liquids freeze over a long period of time, they form large jagged ice crystals. They can be incredible to view under a microscope but tend to spoil the texture of the ice cream.

However, rapid freezing with liquid nitrogen gives rise to much smaller crystals. This gives the ice cream that smooth, palatable consistency to really hit the spot.

This eye-catching feat of science is finding enormous popularity in chic, specialist parlors and among boundary-pushing chefs. Ultrasmooth ice cream is whipped up in wisps of white mist and served to customers looking for that trendy, unorthodox experience. One parlor in Brooklyn even goes so far as to pour liquid nitrogen into its hot chocolate as well.

4. Liquid Nitrogen Cocktails

We’ve already explored the new trend for liquid nitrogen ice cream, but the culinary experiments aren’t limited to milky desserts. Liquid nitrogen, which is an incredible -196 degrees Celsius (-320 °F) in temperature, is being put to a multitude of good uses: cryo-blanching vegetables, grinding frozen herbs, splitting up berries into tiny icy droplets, and more.

Some bartenders have even gotten in on the act, pouring the subzero chemicals into their drinks for spellbinding effect. Liquid nitrogen cocktails produce a smoky white mist that hangs over the top of the glass, almost like a witch’s cauldron. They are proving a popular novelty treat among revelers.

However, these fashionable beverages aren’t without their potential risks.

In 2012, a British woman had to undergo surgery to remove part of her stomach after consuming the dangerous drink. Eighteen-year-old Gaby Scanlon needed a gastrectomy following a night out at Oscars bar in Lancaster when she effectively subjected her insides to frostbite.

The cryogenic cocktails came under heavy fire after the incident. The British Compressed Gases Association said that adding liquid nitrogen to a drink is an “extremely stupid” thing to do.

3. Survival Of Resilient Animals

Subjected to extremely cold conditions, the vast majority of known creatures would barely stand a chance of survival, particularly warm-blooded mammals. For human beings, hypothermia begins to set in once our core body temperature dips below 35 degrees Celsius (95 °F). Your heart and other internal organs are no longer able to function properly. Extended exposure to the cold can cause them to shut down altogether.

However, there are a select few resilient little creatures that can survive temperatures unimaginable to us humans. The most impressive is a tiny parasitic leech from East Asia known as Ozobranchus jantseanus. Japanese researchers discovered that the leeches can withstand temperatures of around -196 degrees Celsius (-320 °F) for up to 24 hours.

There are only two other creatures that have previously survived those temperatures - water bears and drosophilid fly larvae. However, both species could only manage an hour.

Furthermore, a whole batch of leeches was able to survive a full nine months stored at -90 degrees Celsius (-130 °F) - only a few degrees above the lowest natural temperature ever measured on Earth. Some of them even managed 2.5 years.

Scientists remain puzzled as to why this East Asian leech is so adaptable to extreme cold, especially as it would never usually encounter such temperatures in the wild. If they can find the answer, it could help improve cryopreservation techniques.

2. Serious Injuries

While a few creatures can survive for hours at temperatures well below zero, the vast majority of us find these low temperatures to be incredibly hazardous. You might think that the worst a short burst of severe cold can do is freeze your tongue to a lamp post. But at these extremes, even brief exposure can cause irreversible damage. For example, liquid nitrogen has the potential to freeze your skin tissue or eye fluid, which could lead to frostbite, eye damage, or even worse.

In fact, one particularly unwise use of liquid nitrogen put a man in a coma. In summer 2013, energy drink company Jagermeister decided to throw a promotional pool party in Leon, Mexico. To add to the atmosphere, the organizers wanted a mist to hang over the pool.

When liquid nitrogen boils, it produces an amazing cloud of nitrogen fog. So, instead of using fog machines, the organizers poured buckets and buckets of liquid nitrogen into the pool.

While the cryogenic chemicals definitely produced a lot of fog, they also hospitalized nine people. Instead of oxygen, swimmers started breathing in the clouds of nitrogen fog billowing over the pool and began to asphyxiate.

Paramedics had to pull people to safety after several swimmers passed out, including a 21-year-old man who fell into a coma. Fortunately, everyone injured at the party later recovered.

1. Absolute Zero

Of all the temperatures to be explored on this list, absolute zero is the coldest of them all. In fact, theoretically speaking, absolute zero is the lowest temperature possible. There is nothing colder. Particles in a gas at absolute zero would barely have an iota of energy. Their movement would purely be limited to miniscule fluctuations caused by quantum physics.

Absolute zero is such a remarkable temperature that scientists created a brand-new temperature scale in 1954 to properly address it. They named this scale Kelvin (K) in honor of the Irish physicist Lord Kelvin.

As the name suggests, absolute zero corresponds to zero Kelvin (0 K), which translates to -273.15 degrees Celsius (-459.67 °F). We already discussed temperatures a mere fraction of a degree above 0 K in the explanation of Bose-Einstein condensates.

Of course, it is worth mentioning that absolute zero is a purely theoretical temperature. The Third Law of Thermodynamics tells us that it would take an infinite amount of work to reach a temperature this low.

That said, scientists experimenting with laser cooling techniques have managed to get remarkably close. In 2015, physicists at Stanford University cooled a cloud of rubidium atoms to 50 trillionths of a degree above 0 K, the all-time lowest temperature on record.

As these cutting-edge cooling techniques continue to evolve, breakthroughs in temperature-based research look set to keep on coming. At the turn of the 20th century, liquid nitrogen was a relatively new development. Now we have the technology to experiment at temperatures within a hair’s breadth of absolute zero. As for what the next 100 years have in store for us, only time will tell.

Coders get into the flow. Good programmers will tell you that time seems to stop when they are having fun with code. So it’s obvious a coder’s idea of time might be a bit different from others. The minutes might not matter as much as progress.

10 of History’s Greatest Engineering Achievements

The history of civilization is replete with examples of humanity improving the world in which it lives. Through ingenuity, imagination, and hard work, humanity has spanned rivers, built roads, erected cities, and created the infrastructure to connect them. Some projects took centuries to complete; others were finished with alacrity, driven by immediate needs. Many were treated with derision by contemporaries who considered the vision of their proponents’ to be delusional. Some - the Panama Canal being one example of many - were completed only after a spectacular and expensive failure during earlier attempts. Still others were spurred by the competition between nations and empires.

Spectacular feats of engineering preceded the term engineer. The master builders and visionaries evolved over the centuries from mathematicians (spontaneously, it would seem) across the globe. The Great Wall in China, the pyramids of the Maya and Aztec cultures, the cities of the ancient world all were accomplished by engineering, though the builders and designers were unaware that they were engineers. Over the centuries, engineering accomplishments were directed at the worship of gods and heroes, the improvement of societal life, and to simply celebrate the spirit of humanity. Here are 10 of the greatest engineering achievements in history.

10. The Roman water distribution system


Three centuries before the beginning of the Common Era the Roman Republic, later the Empire, distributed water throughout its dominions using a system of canals, pipes, reservoirs, standing tanks, and aqueducts. Entirely through the use of gravity the Romans distributed fresh water to cities and towns, as well as to mines and farms. Some of the aqueducts still stand, architectural marvels built by laborers under the supervision of surveyors and master builders. By the end of the third century the city of Rome was serviced by eleven separate water conduits distributing water throughout the city, and in the case of the wealthier citizens directly into their homes. Poorer residents resorted to public wells and baths.

The empire was serviced with water systems as well, operated by both local governments and the state. Natural springs were the preferred sources of water. Easements were established by law on either side of the conduit’s pathway. The waterways were liberally supplied with inspection points - which would today be called manholes - and the water was routinely inspected for purity. Lead pipes were used in some sections, though the use of ceramic piping was preferred, and sections of the aqueducts which were of concrete were lined with brick, to prevent erosion and to help filter the water. The system was so well designed and built that there are sections still in use for the distribution of fresh water nearly 20 centuries after they were built.

9. The Cathedral of Hagia Sophia


Built as a Christian church and later converted to an Islamic mosque, the Cathedral of Hagia Sophia is today a museum, and an iconic image of Turkey. Originally constructed in the sixth century it has survived rioting, looting by conquerors, earthquakes, fires, and the ravages of time. Built chiefly of masonry, it is easily recognized by its corner minarets and its massive dome. Built and rebuilt many times over the years, it remains a symbol of Byzantine architecture, and for over 1,000 years Hagia Sophia was the largest cathedral in the world. Its design was revolutionary in its day.

The huge dome is set upon a square base, supported by four triangle shaped pendentives in the square’s corners. The pendentives carry the weight of the dome and direct it downwards, rather than outwards as the shape of the dome would otherwise dictate. Though the dome collapsed on more than one occasion, and was modified during rebuilding to include ribs which help distribute its weight to the supporting walls, each rebuilding strengthened it and improved the overall structure of the building. Hagia Sophia is a museum of both the Christian and Islamic faiths, as well as the Byzantine Empire and the Crusades. It remains one of the largest masonry buildings in the world in the 21st century.

8. The Leshan Buddha


Carved from a single stone and completed in the early ninth century, the Great Buddha of Leshan stands over 230 feet tall, with a breadth across the shoulders of 92 feet. It is the tallest statue of Buddha to be found in the world, carved from the sandstone of a cliff overlooking the junction of the Min and Dadu Rivers in Sichuan. Ordinarily sandstone would be easily eroded by the rainwater which has fallen on the statue over the centuries. That it hasn’t is a tribute to the ingenious engineering which controls the flow of water through and behind the statue, which has served to protect it since its completion circa 803 CE.

The Leshan Buddha includes over 1,000 coiled hair buns, of stone, which are placed on the statue’s head. They were designed to collect rainwater, and to route it to a system of drains and drainpipes which allow the water to flow through the statue’s head and arms, draining out the back, behind the stone clothes and away from the statue, protecting it from the effects of erosion. The system was installed as part of the original carving. Originally protected by a wooden shelter which was destroyed by the Mongols, the statue has stood exposed to the elements for seven centuries, with its drainage system protecting it from erosion. Today the greatest threat to the statue is the heavily polluted air of the region, a factor its designers could not have anticipated.

7. The Erie Canal


Between the Hudson River and Lake Erie land elevation increases by about 600 feet. Canal locks of the day (1800) could raise or lower boats about 12 feet, which meant that at least 50 locks would be required to build a canal which linked the Hudson with the Great Lakes. President Thomas Jefferson called the project “…little short of madness.” New York’s governor, Dewitt Clinton, disagreed and supported the project, which led to its detractors calling the canal “Dewitt’s Ditch” and other, less mild pejoratives. Clinton pursued the project fervently, overseeing the creation of a 360 mile long waterway across upstate New York, which linked the upper Midwest to New York City. The cities of Buffalo, New York, and Cleveland, Ohio, thrived once the canal was completed, in 1825.

The engineering demands of the canal included the removal of earth using animal power, water power (using aqueducts to redirect water flow), and gunpowder to blast through limestone. None of the canal’s planners and builders were professional engineers, instead they were mathematics instructors, judges, and amateur surveyors who learned as they went. Labor was provided by increased immigration, mostly from Ireland and the German provinces. When it was completed in 1825 the canal was considered an engineering masterpiece, one of the longest canals in the world. The Erie Canal’s heyday was relatively short, due to the development of the railroads, but it led to the growth of the port of New York, and spurred the building of competing canals in other Eastern states.

6. The Brooklyn Bridge


The Brooklyn Bridge was originally envisioned by John Roebling, who had built suspension bridges of shorter spans across the Ohio River and at other locations. The project in Brooklyn and Manhattan led to an accident which cost Roebling his life, and the engineering challenges passed to his son, Washington Roebling. Washington was stricken with the bends early in the construction, and was forced to supervise the project from his Manhattan apartment. The engineering challenges were difficult; wooden caissons were sunk to the bottom of the East River, with men inside them to excavate the river bottom until the caissons reached bedrock. In the case of the east tower supporting the bridge, they never did. The tower rests on sand to this day.

It took 14 years to complete the project, from 1869 to 1883. Often described as a suspension bridge, the structure is in reality a hybrid suspension/cable stayed bridge, with the load of the span transferred by wire cables to the towers, and thence to the bedrock on the Brooklyn side, and the sand over the bedrock on the Manhattan side. In the 21st century it carries six lanes of traffic as well as bicycles and pedestrians, though it no longer accommodates rail traffic, nor commercial vehicles. It was considered the engineering masterpiece of the world at the time of its completion, spanning nearly six thousand feet, and linking the formerly separate cities of Brooklyn and New York.

5. The Eiffel Tower


Gustave Eiffel built the iconic symbol of Paris - indeed of all of France - to serve as the gateway to the 1889 World’s Fair. Contrary to popular belief, Eiffel did not design the tower, instead purchasing the patent rights to the design from engineers within his employ. He then signed a contract for the construction of the tower acting as himself, rather than as his company, and later set up another company to handle the management of the tower and the income derived from it. The design of the tower was controversial from the outset, with artists and engineers complaining of its lack of esthetic value. It was said that French writer Guy de Maupassant ate at the restaurant in the tower after its completion because it was the only place in Paris from which the tower could not be seen.

The ironwork was delivered to the site with holes for connecting bolts predrilled, and as they were installed the tower was brought into proper alignment through the use of hydraulic jacks installed near the four feet of the structure. Creeper cranes climbed the legs of the tower to erect each succeeding level. The tower was declared complete in March 1889, at the time the tallest manmade structure in the world. It reached the height of 1,063 feet and remains the tallest structure in Paris. The tower was to have been dismantled in 1909, under the terms of the original contract, but its usefulness as a radio transmitter gained it a longer lease on life. By the end of the twentieth century the idea of dismantling the tower was unthinkable.

4. The Panama Canal


The 51-mile long cut across the Isthmus of Panama was a dream for many decades prior to the French beginning its construction in 1881. During the building of America’s Transcontinental Railroad, equipment for use in the Sierras was shipped from the east coast of the United States to Panama, transferred across the Isthmus, and then shipped to California. Engineers for years studied the building of a canal before the French attempted to complete one, but the engineering difficulties combined with the climate and politics to thwart their efforts after more than two decades. The United States stepped in where the French failed, and completed the canal in 1914, after another ten years of work.

The canal is actually two canals, connected on either end with an artificial lake, Lake Gatun, located 85 feet above sea level. Locks on the two canals raise or lower ships to or from the level of the lake, allowing them to traverse from Atlantic to Pacific, or vice versa. The canal allows ships to transfer from one ocean to the other in just under twelve hours. It was the engineering decision to abandon the sea level canal design favored by the French and instead create Lake Gatun through the building of Gatun Dam (then the largest dam in the world) and install locks to raise and lower ships which allowed the Americans to succeed in completing the dam, which changed shipping lanes and inter-ocean traffic forever.

3. The Channel Tunnel


For centuries the British Isles remained unconnected to the European continent, a situation which many Britons favored as critical to their national security. Numerous proposals for a tunnel beneath the channel were put forth, but opposition within England and France prevented any serious efforts. Attempts to build tunnels for automobile traffic were started and stopped in the mid-to-late 20th century. Finally, in the late 1980s, after the usual political and professional maneuvering among governments, businesses, and financiers, work on the tunnels for high speed rail trains got underway, already bearing the nickname by which it is best known today, the Chunnel.

The tunnel was built from both sides, using massive tunnel boring machines - TBMS - to approach each other. The machines bore through what is mostly chalk, though the varying geology of the French shore created some difficulties. Both the French and English used the removed spoil for land reclamation projects. The tunnels were lined with both cast iron and reinforced concrete. When completed, the tunnel provided electrical power to the trains running through it via overhead lines. The tunnel opened in 1994, and today allows for a trip from London to Paris in just over two hours. The tunnel also allows for freight traffic delivering goods manufactured throughout Europe to be imported to Britain, and British goods to find markets on the continent.

2. Burj Khalifa


The world’s tallest structure as of 2019, Burj Khalifa is a mixed use skyscraper in Dubai, which was completed in 2009. The building was designed by the same Chicago firm which designed the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) in that city, and uses the same engineering principle of bundled tubes at its core to support the building’s weight. The tubular design allowed for substantially less steel to be used in construction, with most of the building being reinforced concrete. Its spire alone, which is mostly decorative, would qualify it as the 11th tallest structure in Europe were it erected on the continent.

The building has an outdoor swimming pool located on the 76th floor, with another on the 43rd floor. A 300 room hotel is located within the building, as well as corporate offices and private apartments. For those of a hardy constitution, 2,909 steps connect the ground floor with the 160th. The observation deck is located on the 124th floor. The surrounding park, known as Burj Khalifa Park, is landscaped with desert plants which are kept hydrated using water collected by the building’s cooling system, which itself relies on the cooler air of the upper portion of the building to decrease the temperatures of the lower portion of the structure.

1. The Apollo Space Program


It remains one of the signature engineering achievements in the history of the human race. No other program has delivered human beings to an environment other than their home planet and returned them safely to earth. Americans not only walked on the surface of the moon, they drove on it, using a battery driven vehicle designed for the purpose, capable of carrying two astronauts and greatly increasing the area which the lunar explorers could cover. It was carried to the moon within the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) and used for the final three moon missions in the early 1970s. In 2003, the National Academy of Engineers called the program the “…greatest engineering team effort in American history.”

The Apollo program led to significant advances in the development of integrated circuitry, contributed to the growing cause of environmentalism, and over 20% of the world’s population watched on television when astronaut Neil Armstrong left the first human footprints on the lunar surface. NASA claimed spin-offs from the space program in the areas of freeze-dried foods, emergency reflective blankets, hand-held portable vacuum cleaners, and more than 2,000 other areas. LASIK surgery is a direct descendant of the technology developed to dock with vehicles in space, first performed as part of the Gemini program, in which astronauts learned the techniques required of Apollo.

We think of addiction as something that must be detrimental to one’s health. However, in reality, many of us are addicted to various things that may not hamper our lives in any way.

These addictions are still quite real as well as essential for our day-to-day functioning. It may be coffee for some, cleanliness for others, and obsessively sharing kitten memes for someone else - whatever engages the reward system in the brain for each of us.

It gets weird, however, when we see a compulsion that has no reason to exist in the first place. Ever come across kids who can’t stop eating sand or heard about people addicted to eating ashes?

These addictions - which don’t have a clear-cut reason to exist but are as real as the other dangerous ones - fascinate us the most. Here are some of the most baffling ones.

10. Tanning


The artificial UV tanning industry could simply be explained by the inherent human tendency to look different than our usual selves, somewhat like how people with curly hair want to have it straightened and vice versa. And it works well, too, especially for the times of the year when the sun isn’t enough to give you a darker tone.

When it gets weird is when you can’t stop - not because you like the tan too much but because you have an addiction to it.

Cases of people getting addicted to the artificial tanning process are abundant. If you think it’s the same thing as people who just can’t stop having their hair done, it goes a bit beyond that.

Many recent studies have confirmed that tanning addiction is very real and engages the same part of the brain as drugs like heroin. Some research points to the possibility that it may just be in your genes, even if only a small percentage of people who regularly go for tanning can actually be classified as dependent on it.

9. Drinking Urine

You may have heard of people who insist that drinking your own - and, in some extreme cases, other people’s - urine is good for health. As long as they’re not harming anyone in the process, there’s not much we can do to convince them otherwise. Even if no scientific study has ever proven a correlation between that behavior and any health benefits, it’s more of a case of “to each his own” and we respect that.

Sometimes, though, it can go well beyond a general preference for human urine as food. Quite a few people have reported that they start getting withdrawal symptoms if they don’t get their daily fix of urine.

For example, Robert Wells, who is in his sixties, can’t stop collecting urine from younger people - often without their knowledge - and drinking it. He admits that it’s an urge he can’t control. In fact, he has been charged with multiple sex offenses for going out and collecting pee from kids.

Wells believes that urine from young people will help to keep him looking young for a longer time.

8. Animal Hoarding


We’ve all heard of the “crazy cat lady” trope, even though we’re not sure why it can’t apply to men, too. We all know of someone who has surrounded herself with a bunch of animals to make up for a lack of social skills, even if it may just be about loving animals a bit too much rather than a case of loneliness. However, there are those rare occasions that are so bad that it actually harms the animals involved and can border on being an addiction.

Science agrees that animal hoarding has many features of an actual addiction, including denial of the problem, a compulsive need to engage in it, excuses for this behavior, and no regard for maintaining the individual’s personal surroundings. It may sound like the “crazy cat lady” stereotype is true, but in actual cases, it’s much more serious than just collecting a lot of pets. It’s also difficult to overcome without help.

7. Human Blood

Vampires have been a part of Western folklore for as long as we can remember. We’re not sure if these stories are based on real cases of people obsessed with human blood, but mythology often doesn’t care about facts. We also don’t know if these individuals were actually addicted to drinking blood or if they just occasionally dabbled because they liked the taste of it. But again, they’re fictional and don’t require an in-depth explanation for how vampirism works.

If we talk about real life, though, an addiction to drinking blood is certainly scientifically possible. In fact, a Turkish man was reportedly addicted to drinking his own blood. The doctors described his need for blood to be “as urgent as breathing,” even though they weren’t able to explain how he developed it.

He had no disorder or deficiency that could explain it, though he was afflicted with a personality disorder. Also, he had witnessed some violent events earlier in his life, though those things don’t come close to explaining how he developed the compulsion. Thankfully, he was just addicted to drinking his own blood.

6. Coffee Enema


An enema may sound gross, but it’s one of the most effective and widely used medical methods for relieving severe constipation. Although enemas are mostly administered by professionals, there are ways to do it yourself at home by injecting your backside with fluids to stimulate a bowel movement.

A coffee enema - an experimental variation done with coffee and first introduced in the 1940s by Dr. Max Gerson - is not the same thing. Many doctors and scientists have pointed out its ill effects on the body, and it’s no longer offered by medical facilities in the US for those reasons.

That hasn’t stopped a Florida couple from developing an addiction to coffee enemas. They feel a rush while doing it and get withdrawal symptoms if they don’t. They describe the feeling as a kind of euphoria and give themselves coffee enemas an average of four times a day. The wife has admitted to giving herself one up to 10 times in a day in the past.

5. Getting Tattoos


You may have come across people with a bunch of tattoos all over their bodies. Given the increasing acceptance of tattoos in society, there’s a high chance that at least one of these individuals is in your social circle. Tattoos may mean different things to different people, and it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact psychological reasons for why we like getting them so much.

In some cases, however, tattoos can go beyond just inking a piece of art on your body that means something special to you. Tattoo addiction is a real thing for more people than you’d guess. According to research, about 32 percent of Americans admit to being addicted to tattoos and feel the need to go out and get a new one shortly after their last one.

Some scientists have tried to explain it as an addiction to the pain that comes with the process of getting a tattoo. It may also have to do with being addicted to the attention. However, science is still figuring out exactly what causes a chronic addiction to tattoos.

4. Romantic Rejection


Asking someone out and getting rejected is one of the most normal parts of most people’s dating lives. Almost all of us have experienced it in one form or the other. Sure, it may not be the preferable outcome, but it’s still something you have to wade through if you actually like dating.

It’s a problem, though, when some people can get addicted to it to the point that they enjoy all the heartbreak and pain arising from rejection. And we are not making this up.

According to a study published in Journal of Neurophysiology, romantic rejection involves the same parts of the brain that cause us to get addicted to something. The researchers even came up with a parameter for it - the Passionate Love Scale - and concluded that romantic rejection is definitely a form of addiction.

We may be making it sound like all fun and games, but it also does a lot to explain cases of rejected people becoming violent toward the person who rebuffed them. In many cases, this leads to extreme outcomes like suicide or murder.

3. Plastic Surgery


For the longest time in our history, permanent disfigurement due to accidents was irreversible. Back then, we didn’t have today’s medical tech to do something about it. Plastic surgery was a revolutionary development, allowing us to fix parts of our body. It was obvious that we’d soon be using it to make us look better.

It’s when some people compulsively feel the need to keep changing their appearance with plastic surgery that it turns into an actual addiction. Although scientists don’t understand how that manifests itself, we know of too many celebrities who can’t stop themselves from getting plastic surgery.

Some experts explain it with a disorder called body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Sufferers feel the need to continually change their looks. Not everyone addicted to plastic surgery is diagnosed with BDD, and we don’t quite understand why so many people without any other underlying medical conditions would compulsively get up to 10 plastic surgeries in a day.

2. Milk Products


Even people who do not experience lactose intolerance may suffer from a dairy-related ailment. For these individuals, milk derivatives like butter or cheese are something they’d never refuse.

Some people are unhealthily obsessed with these products, often using them to replace regular meals no matter what it does to their health. If that sounds like an addiction, it absolutely is. Milk and its derivatives contain molecules that attach to the same parts of the brain as drugs like opiates.

Milk contains casein as well as other similar chemicals like casomorphins. These substances act like the highly addictive painkiller morphine. In fact, they’re like each other in chemical composition and what they do to our brains. The brain also releases quite a bit of dopamine while eating cheese, further exacerbating its addictive effects and essentially making us hooked on it.

1. Drinking Water


Humans are a water-based species. So it doesn’t take a health professional or an Instagram fitness blogger to convince us of the benefits of drinking a lot of water each day. It keeps our bodies running the way they should, does wonders for our skin, and generally helps us feel better than someone who doesn’t consume enough of it.

If we told you that it’s possible to become addicted to water in the same way as other harmful substances, you’d probably tell us to get out of here. But according to science, it’s absolutely possible to get addicted to water.

In some cases, people who don’t get their daily fix of water can experience headaches and other withdrawal symptoms. For many people who have “aquaholism” - as it’s unofficially called - staying away from water for even an hour may mean irritation and the compulsive need to get back to it.

Like everything in excess, this can lead to some serious negative effects on the body. Occasionally, it may also be related to a disorder called polydipsia in which a lack of sodium content in the blood can lead to excessive thirst. But most people reported to have been addicted to water don’t have that.
