1. Artificial Intelligence (AI) coming of age is, um, coming
AI has been on the receiving end of massive financial investment over the last few years. According to Forbes, 80% of enterprises are now investing in it or are planning to expand AI investment if they already are.
This influx of money has given rise to some serious innovation in deep learning. With all this cash flowing around, many tech experts believe AI will really "come of age" within the next few years.
2. Internet at the speed of lightning
The appetite for faster and faster internet connection is really pushing the technology forward. Businesses and private users are constantly demanding ever quicker response times and the industry is responding.
With lightning-fast internet speeds just around the corner, it should be transformative for many aspects of our lives. Should it be achieved, it will increase the efficiency of workers and will provide reliable communication tools for companies that rely on remote workers.
This is where 5G might be able to change the world as much as our "regular" internet did several decades ago. That's if it doesn't kill us all first, of course.
3. Life-enriching smart tech will change the home

4. Dextrous robots might be with us very soon

While it may be possible to program robots to figure out how to grasp something by "looking" at it in the future, current research is trying to make them learn how to do so through a trial and error process.

Innovations like Elon Musk's Neuralink could make the mouse and keyboard obsolete in the future. Work in this area is continuing apace and promises to allow us to control computers just by thinking.

6. Swallowable medical devices are on the way
Small, swallowable devices are currently being developed that can capture images of your guts without the need for anesthetic. They can even be used in infants and children.
Once fully developed these little medical devices will revolutionize how medical professionals diagnose and monitor some very serious diseases. This will be an incredibly powerful tool for things like cancer and intestinal disorders like environmental enteric dysfunction.
7. Custom cancer vaccines could be a reality soon
Thanks to scientific developments like the Human Genome Project, personalized medicines and vaccines could be just around the corner. One interesting application for this is the possibility of developing personalized cancer vaccines.
This might sound a little far-fetched, but it is hoped that medical professionals could soon train your immune system to identify and destroy cancer cells. This, if achieved, could make cancer a thing of the past.
8. Fancy a cow-free burger?

Whether lab-grown, 3D printed or plant-based, alternatives that provide the same nutritional value as proper meat could soon be a reality. It will also offer a means for mankind to reduce dramatically our collective appetite for meat's impact on the planet.
9. An end to sewers is on the way (hopefully)

Developments are afoot to push forward with "eco-friendly" toilets that do not need a connection to a sewer system and can treat waste on the spot. Not only will this be revolutionary for cities of the future, but it will bring much-needed sanitation to many parts of the world that currently lack this "luxury."
Philanthropists Bill Gates has been running a competition called "Reinvent the Toilet Challenge" to find suitable, viable prototypes for this. Many submissions are actually quite promising and once self-contained, self waste metabolizing systems will benefit mankind and the environment for the better.
10. GANs - Generative Adversarial Networks are on the way
GANs, or Generative Adversarial Networks is one of the latest developments in neural networks could be the future. Invented by Ian Goodfellow, this class of machine learning basically sets two neural networks against each other to solve a problem.
Given a set starting condition, the two networks battle it out in a usually non-zero sum game to find a solution to something. These have been described by some as "the coolest idea in machine learning in the last twenty years"
Applications for this technology include generating artificial images, modeling things, improving computer games and many more.

10 REASONS WHY IT’S TIME TO DESTROY THE INTERNET
Today we live in the age of instant information and instant gratification, and many people feel they cannot live without the internet. However, for the longest time humanity did just fine without it in their lives, and we could do so again. In fact, the truth is that at this point, the internet is probably doing more harm than good to humanity, and it would be better if it just went away for a while. While that may sound radical to some, we have our reasons for saying so, which we will explain in today’s article.
10. The Internet Can Connect People, But It Can Also Isolate You To The World Close To You
Many people like to talk about how it is such a great positive that the internet connects people from all over the world on sites like Facebook. However, when you really stop to think about it, while it seems like it is keeping us all connected, it can also keep us isolated without us even realizing it.
The problem is that when we see the little status updates, and get that dopamine high, especially when we are already busy with real life; it fulfills this part of our mind that believes we need to stay in touch with people and spend time with them. That psychological fulfillment makes us think we are being connected, but unless we are actually at least having conversations and talking to them through messenger, we are more alone than ever, despite being able to see pictures of their children and leave a like or two. We may be more connected, but we are also more isolated than ever.
9. The Internet Has Almost All Knowledge, But It Lacks A Filter To Help You Evaluate It
The internet is often praised because it is a repository of pretty much the sum total of all human knowledge (minus certain things that are secret or classified). However, while this may sound like one of the greatest things ever, it is a double-edged sword and comes at a great cost. We were always able to get to the vast majority of humanity’s non-secret knowledge through libraries or other sources, but it took us longer to do so, and required us to go through more trusted sources first.
Now, through the internet, we can find thousands or even millions of results about the same thing, and there is no guarantee they are going to agree on any given bit of information. In fact, more often than not, they don’t. When researching anything online, you have to be careful about who is and isn’t a legitimate source. This can be tricky because the internet has made us all think we are experts on everything when we really aren’t. Evaluating information when you don’t know a subject well already is extra hard, and if someone wants to build a foundation first to understand the information they found on the internet, they usually try to build that foundation of knowledge…on the internet.
8. Facebook Has Become So Omnipresent It Is Sui Generis In Terms Of Power
Sui generis means “in a class of its own” and that is basically what has happened with the social media site Facebook. It has become so dominant and so powerful that its influence can practically be compared to that of many governments, and there is little in the way of real regulation to control how or why they do business the way they do. Some countries have occasionally turned Facebook off for a bit in times of crisis, but the backlash is usually so fierce that it quickly returns.
This brings up the question about what to do with something like Facebook in the long term. As a single company, without taking any of our money, they have managed an insane amount of influence over our daily lives, and no social network, or social habits, seem currently capable of breaking people of that influence (or addiction, as the case may be with some, due to the constant dopamine high we get from scrolling through). The truth is that something like Facebook is simply unprecedented in known human history, and it could have unknown ramifications decades from now - it is already hard to quantify just how much it is changing the way we interact, and removing the internet entirely may be the only way to stop it.
7. No Bad Idea Cannot Be Found With Detailed Instructions And Advocates For Its Use
The internet is a place where you can find information about pretty much anything - and sometimes you don’t even have to look that hard. Unfortunately, this isn’t limited to just the good stuff. If you want instructions for how to 3D print a gun, or make bombs or other dangerous things, you just need to hop online, and that’s really only the start. If it’s illegal and you can think of it, it’s online.
And the internet just isn’t policed that well, as people are uploading things constantly and creating new web pages all the time, and there is little oversight. The FBI and other international organizations are constantly looking for things like child pornography and some of the worst, most illegal things that are being shown, sold, or given instructions on how to do, but it’s like trying to remove all the water out of the ocean with a bucket. And, to make matters worse, a lot of legal gray areas make the information hard to take down as long as the person says they aren’t actually using it, and that it’s just for educational purposes.
6. The Internet Has Normalized All Kinds Of Bizarre Fetishes Into The Mainstream
Now, don’t get us wrong, we aren’t saying we are prudishly against pornography or that there is anything wrong with something that consenting people do in their own bedrooms. However, the proliferation of pornography on the internet, as satirized by South Park, has often made it harder and harder for a lot of people to get off simply by watching, reading, or thinking about normal, vanilla sex. It’s practically boring now to some people (you can find dozens of articles online about whether or not you should “shame” people for liking vanilla sex), and almost every piece of sexual media now has some kind of strange fetish, or some special element to it to make it more interesting.
In a way this is not surprising, as the internet has led to a renaissance in terms of high quality entertainment, but it has also led to a situation where many young people start getting into sex and expect things that may not necessarily be reality. And also, while it may be easy enough to find people into the stranger fetishes online, it may be a lot harder to find a partner who is also into it, and the internet is full of people talking about how they are struggling either to get their partner to accept their fetish, or deal with their partner’s strangeness. This doesn’t mean it’s wrong to have a harmless but weird fetish, but it has made a lot of young people have unrealistic expectations about sex, and maybe given them an inaccurate view of how easy it is to find a compatible partner that shares a rarer fetish.
5. Child Pornography Has Proliferated Like Never Before
In the age of the internet, child porn has become a huge problem, and it isn’t showing signs of stopping anytime soon. The problem is that the internet is worldwide and people can upload things from any corner of the globe, which makes it hard to actually punish or get to a lot of people even when you do realize who is the one perpetrating the wrongdoing. You may have to refer things to their country’s law enforcement and wait, while children are suffering. And of course, that is if you can track them to begin with, as evil child pornographers are constantly using new tools in an attempt to stay anonymous with the authorities.
And for webmasters, you cannot just ban people in most cases from posting pictures at all (you would have no one left using your websites), so instead, with a combination of automated programs, and often traumatized humans, we as a species play a grim game of child porn whack-a-mole. But as long as the internet exists, especially as the mostly unregulated international entity that it is, it is unlikely we will ever be able to eradicate it from the worldwide web entirely.
4. Bullying Has Now Been Taken To An Entirely New Level In The Modern Age
Back in the day, if you wanted to bully someone you had to at least have the courage to face them in person, or maybe call their house, which required a little more nerve than a quick message on Facebook. Now, people feel emboldened to simply be mean, and to constantly attack others all day on social media, even when they know full well if they pulled that in person they would probably get a very real punch in the face. Now, whole gangs of kids can easily harass one person without leaving the comfort of their homes, and drive them to suicide.
And it’s rather hard to properly punish them for it. Unless they are actually demonstrably encouraging someone to commit suicide, that kind of intent can be hard to prove, and punishments are much less harsh for minors anyway, from a legal standpoint. The truth is that as long as the internet exists, at least as such an unregulated entity, it is going to be a hotbed for bullying, whether it is just an individual or an entire group ganging up on other kids, and it is going to be very hard to stop. It gives bullies a feeling of power, and it causes the victims to feel like they never have a place they can go to escape the pain. Some would say just go offline, but with the youth of today, that pretty much involves social isolation, so it isn’t really an effective or long term escape from the bullying.
3. No Matter How Bad What You Believe Is, You Will Find Friends Online
Before the dawn of the internet, if you had really awful ideas, such as racism, it would be really hard to find that many people who agreed with you that vociferously, especially depending on where you live. However, with the help of the internet you can find people who will agree with any bad idea you have. You could believe that young boys should be able to consent to sex like NAMBLA, the very real organization satirized on South Park, or that sex with animals is okay, or whatever bad idea you can imagine. You will find friends on the internet. And it has gotten bad enough that you will find people who not only think it isn’t so bad, but will defend it (and you) to the ends of the earth.
This allows bad ideas that were on the fringe, and dying out, to see a sudden resurgence in popularity, and infect an entirely new generation with some of the same old bad ideas and behaviors we once thought we had eliminated. With the help of such mass communication, it is all too easy to ensure that no bad idea ever truly dies, and sometimes even returns stronger than ever.
2. It Is No Longer A Bastion Of Free Communication, And Its Usefulness Is Ending Quickly
Net neutrality has officially ended in the USA, and despite efforts to curtail the inevitable, the telecoms are winning the battle, and their money is winning the day. However, after all that spending, all they really may end up doing is killing the internet once and for all, and as such foolishly killing their own business off like the greedy idiots they are. The truth is that the free enterprise and fairness and ability of anyone to do anything on the internet was what made it useful, despite the double-edged sword aspects, and with that gone it will slowly become more like a slightly interactive form of cable television.
When the big telecoms start to control more and more corners of the internet, and independent and burgeoning websites begin to die off, people will find it less and less useful, and perhaps spend more time interacting with each other in person for a change, or at least reach out through telephone chatting more, instead of just “liking” or “retweeting” things. The fact of the matter is that when something that was all about free communication becomes…well, not that, it’s hard to expect it to exist much longer, at least in anything close to its current form.
1. It Has Almost Become “Too Big To Fail” and The Consequences Could Be Dire
Now, the argument by some when we talk about moving on from the internet is that it’s almost too integral a part of daily life, and “too big to fail.” However, the argument against this is the same one many made against bailing out certain banks after financial collapses. The idea is that if something is too big too fail, then we need to let it fail anyway and fix the mess regardless of the pain, because something that we can live without, but that is “too big to fail,” is overall a detriment to society that will eventually collapse on its own.
If we control the collapse, we can at least mitigate the damage. However, if we wait until it’s too late, until the internet really starts to fall apart on its own, the damage to our social and other physical infrastructure is going to be much harder to contain, as it will not really be a “controlled dive” off of our dependency on the internet. However, the good news is that we have lived without it before, and we can live without it again. And if we could end our dependence on the internet, we could still be technologically advanced and have quick communication, but go back to a better, more thoughtful society that spent more time on real life, personal, meaningful interaction, and was happier and better for it.

10 OF THE WORLD’S LAST UNEXPLORED PLACES
It’s an oft-repeated notion: Everything on Earth has already been explored and how awesome it would have been if we had been born in the Age of Exploration. In a consistently shrinking world due to technology and advanced research tools, that does seem to be true. After all, why would we be thinking about going to distant planets in the solar system if we hadn’t already seen everything on Earth?
For some reason, though, a lot of places on our planet have yet to be explored and many species of organisms have yet to be documented. It’s not due to the incompetence of our scientists and explorers. Political conflicts, harsh climates, and other local conditions are just some of the reasons that these places remain unmarred by human contact.
10. Cape Melville, Australia

If we were to make a list of relatively empty destinations to visit around the world, the whole of Australia would feature somewhere around the top. Despite being one of the most developed and technologically advanced countries on the planet, much of Australia’s landmass is inhospitable and empty, especially around the center. If you look at Australia’s map right now, you’d see that nearly all major cities are around the coasts.
Cape Melville - a mountain range in the northeastern extreme of the country - is sparsely populated and has been essentially cut off from the rest of the world. There are many reasons, including the fact that no one even knew the range existed until 1978 when a native told someone about a type of palm tree found there. Only a few teams had been able to visit the place until recently due to its lack of accessibility.
The landscape is dotted with huge boulders, dense forests, and mist. Scientists still regularly find new animal species when they visit. Knowing Australia and its deadly animals, we’d certainly wouldn’t suggest taking a trip here.
9. Caves Of Meghalaya, India

India is a huge country with a diverse array of landscapes and ecosystems as anyone who has ever visited there would tell you. Though it’s also one of the most continuously inhabited places in the world - even if some regions are emptier than others - all of it seems to be extensively explored at this point.
However, that’s only if you don’t include the northeastern part of the country, which has always been cut off from the rest of India due to its geographical location. We had no idea some places there even existed, and the most mysterious are the caves in the state of Meghalaya.
With one of the largest cave systems in the world, Meghalaya is home to many underground caverns and isolated ecosystems we still haven’t been able to fully explore. Krem Puri, the world’s longest sandstone cave at around 24,000 meters (79,000 ft), was only discovered in 2016. Meanwhile, Krem Um Ladaw was found earlier this year with a shaft as deep as 105 meters (344 ft).
That’s still just the tip of the iceberg. Local experts believe that we’re far from uncovering the full extent of Meghalaya’s cave network.
8. Vale Do Javari, Brazil

A lot has been said about North Sentinel Island and its uncontacted tribe, especially since a Christian missionary recently died on his expedition there. Some people assume that they’re the only uncontacted people in the world as no one would expect something like that to exist in 2019 without making the news.
If you look at the Amazon rain forest, though, you’d find vast regions that are still waiting to be explored and include a tribe that has never been in touch with the rest of the world. Known as the Javari, they live in a valley named after them - Vale do Javari (“Javari Valley”).
Just like the Sentinelese, the Javari have resisted any attempts to get in touch with them. It makes sense to let them be, too, as they’re susceptible to many deadly diseases that the rest of us developed immunity to a long time ago. A single exposure could completely wipe them out.
It also seems like they do not want to be disturbed by anyone, though there have been a few cases of violence against them by gold miners or other outsiders in recent times.
7. Son Doong Cave, Vietnam

The Son Doong Cave in Vietnam is one of our planet’s most impressive natural formations. What may otherwise seem to be an innocuous hole in the ground gives way to an intricate and vast system of underground caverns and unique organisms.
It also happens to be the largest cave in the world and was only fully explored in 2009. What we didn’t know before some explorers visited it in May 2019, though, is that it still contains many secrets.
On one mission, some divers discovered a hidden waterway that connects Son Doong to another cave called Hang Thung. They couldn’t fully explore it because they didn’t have all the gear required for deep dives. So they plan to go back later.
Even so, the entire cave system still has many unexplored regions as well as new animal and plant species we may have never seen before. That is, of course, apart from the unidentified animals we’ve already spotted.
6. Mount Mabu Rain Forest, Africa

Africa is one place that was always difficult to explore, especially in the middle. Not anymore, however. With our modern mapping equipment and thirst for finding new resources, almost all the continent has been mapped, even those areas that are sparsely populated. Still, some regions in Africa are completely untouched by outsiders, including Mount Lico in Mozambique.
Once a volcano, the mountain is a towering structure visible from almost everywhere in the vicinity, though its crater was always hidden due to the high and steep walls. In 2012, a scientist was scouring the area on Google Earth when he discovered an entire rain forest nestled in Mount Lico’s crater.
In 2018, a team of scientists was able to scale it for the first time. They had trained with professional rock climbers and locals for years as they didn’t have funds to hire helicopters for the whole crew. The scientists found an untouched ecosystem and a bunch of species they had never seen before. Further study is planned.
5. Kamchatka, Russia
Back when the Europeans were exploring the world, Russia was going through its own era of discovery. Funded by Russian royalty for the most part, many explorers were sent out to map the whole region we now know as Russia as well as a part of the Americas.
Just like their European counterparts, they experienced many hardships and deaths while mapping Russia. Due to its vastness, a few regions in Russia still aren’t fully explored.
The Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East is one of them. Also known as the “land of volcanoes,” Kamchatka is home to rolling meadows, hot springs, breathtaking views of snowcapped mountains, and diverse flora and fauna you can’t find anywhere else in the world.
It is still largely untouched due to Russia’s long history of political turmoil and the region’s inaccessibility.
4. Fiordland National Park, New Zealand

Anyone who has visited New Zealand will tell you that it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. Even so, Fiordland National Park at the southwestern end of the country stands out for the sheer scale and beauty of its landscape.
Named after its fjords - the towering glacial structures that some think are only in Scandinavia - Fiordland is the largest of New Zealand’s national parks. If you’re having trouble imagining it, just think of The Lord of the Rings as a lot of it was shot there.
Although Fiordland contains quite a few tourist attractions, they form a minor part of the national park as almost all of it is uncharted territory due to its inaccessibility, inhospitable climate, and huge size. For those who can manage it, a plethora of previously undiscovered things reside there, including new animal and plant species and locations no one else has seen before.
3. Cenotes Of Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Cenotes are somewhat like sinkholes, but they’re filled with crystal clear fresh water. Found all over the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, they have played an important role in the mythology of the Maya as cenotes are a source of potable water. They’re one of the most beautiful and mysterious natural formations in the world.
Although the official number of cenotes is roughly 6,000, no one has been able to explore all of them. Scientists believe that many more are waiting to be found. Recently, a team of experts used 3-D technology to map some cenotes, and they aim to explore all 6,000 documented ones with that technique.
While most cenotes are visible from the surface, some of them - known as cave cenotes - require exploring their respective caves first. As of now, we simply have no idea about the extent of life that exists beneath all of them as many cenotes are difficult to get to physically. With technology getting better at mapping underground structures, we hope to discover exactly what’s inside them all someday.
2. Northern Forest Complex, Myanmar

Due to its harsh jungle terrain, Myanmar is a country in Southeast Asia that played a huge yet underappreciated role in halting the Japanese advance on British India. Myanmar is also home to the longest ongoing civil war in history, which started around the time of its independence.
Thankfully, most of the conflict has now been resolved, though some pockets of resistance remain. That’s also why most of the country, especially the northern parts, has been largely untouched by biologists and other explorers.
In fact, the dense jungle in the wilderness area known as the Northern Forest Complex still doesn’t have any roads. Experts believe that there’s a lot to be uncovered and explored there, including new species of plants and animals. A few expeditions have made incursions in the past few years. However, a huge part of the region remains untouched due to the inhospitable terrain as well as the political situation.
The money required to explore the whole area is a problem, too. The Myanmar government is short on cash due to the war and general socioeconomic conditions in the country.
1. Most Of Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea has been discussed a lot in popular culture. There was a time when it was viewed as “that place with cannibals and never-before-seen landscapes.” However, in the past few centuries, a lot of progress has been made. We’re only talking about the cannibal part, though. Much of its landmass is still unexplored due to inaccessibility.
Take the Hindenburg Wall, which is a massive formation of plateaus made of limestone. It has entire forests on top of it that have never been visited, let alone fully explored. When the Wildlife Conservation Society sent a team of biologists there in 2013, they found a total of 1,108 animal and plant species, of which 89 were completely new to science.
On the island of New Britain, the Nakanai Mountains are another system of mountains and ridges formed almost entirely by limestone. In a 2010 expedition, scientists found undocumented species of many animals, including frogs, insects, and spiders.
Some of them were so new that the researchers had to invent whole new families of species to put them in. There may be many more left to find, especially fish, as some of the waterways in the region have never been officially studied.

It’s a common saying that elephants never forget, but these magnificent animals are more than giant walking hard drives. The more we learn about elephants, the more it appears that their impressive memory is only one aspect of an incredible intelligence that makes them some of the most social, creative, and benevolent creatures on Earth. 8 Innovative Drought Solutions That We Can Count On

A drought happens when a region receives less than average rainfall. Unlike the simplicity of this definition, the actual scenario is devastating.
Droughts don’t just affect the plants or livestock of a region, but they also pose a great threat to human lives. It is regarded as a natural disaster considering the damage it does to the entire ecosystem.
We have seen examples of how droughts can create great economic instabilities, owing to the lessened production of resources. In the past 40 years, no natural disaster has affected more people than droughts.
Climate change has been a major factor in the creation of droughts in several parts of the world. As the earth is heating up, many regions of the world are experiencing less precipitation and droughts are becoming more common than ever before.
However, we humans have the ability to think and use our skills to engineer solutions, and in this article, we will go through some of these methods.
1. Desalination of water
Even though more than 70% of the earth’s surface is covered with water, only 0.003% of it is fresh water. In many places of the world, annual rainfall is the only way to replenish the freshwater sources.
But what if we could desalinate water? Then we have oceans to help us get fresh water.
But it is easier said than done. Desalination of water is pretty resource intensive. First, the water needs to be boiled, converted to steam and then condensed.
This requires a significant amount of fossil fuels to produce heat. But hope is still at hand as the developments in the field has made filters made up of graphene that can desalinate water with nothing more than hydrostatic pressure.
2. Rainwater harvesting
Rainwater harvesting has seen major growth in recent years and this is something everyone should adopt. With rainwater harvesting, homes can store the water they get from rain and then use it when they need it in dry conditions.
In urban areas, only 15% of rainwater enters the ground while in rural areas 50% of rainwater is absorbed into the ground. Rainwater harvesting provides both urban and rural areas with an efficient option to store rainwater and then reuse it in times of drought.
If a house has a primary water source, then rainwater harvesting provides them with an auxiliary option that they can use when water is not available. Rainwater harvesting is a great way to combat drought and is now encouraged among farmers and herders to provide their agriculture with water in times of drought.
3. Drip irrigation
Drip irrigation hopes to achieve optimum water delivery for plants and optimum moisture in the soil. The advantage of such a system is that it does not result in water wastage.
Nowadays, many companies have come forward providing the market with cost-effective and intuitive drip irrigation systems.
Technologically advanced farms are moving towards IoT inspired drip irrigation systems that can operate without human intervention. The highly targeted nature of drip irrigation ensures that each plant gets the right amount of water delivered right on its roots.
4. Harvesting water from the air

Air as we know it contains many elements, and one among it is moisture. If we could build something efficient to harvest that moisture and condense it, we could harvest water from the air.
This solar powered device uses a large surface area of the pores in Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) to catch water vapor and pass it between two temperatures zones to condense it. A field test conducted in Arizona was a success and now the team hopes to scale up the system so that it can produce many liters of water within a short period of time.
The two major advantages of this system are that it can harvest water without the use of electricity and has the ability to produce water in desert climates.
5. Crop engineering
We can build new mechanisms outside of the plants to keep them watered and safe from drought, but we could also genetically engineer them to be resilient to conditions where the water content in the soil is very low.
Food production is a crucial part of keeping the population alive. However, droughts can affect the productivity and tip the balance of food available to the masses.
Crop engineering hopes to tweak the genetics of existing crops to help them increase their yield and provide them with better resistance to drought.
A research project from Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE) has successfully improved corps in the way they use water, up to 25% more efficiently.
Researches have been done by various organizations around the world in efforts to engineer crops that can withstand the harshness of droughts.
6. Solar pumps
The most common method that we use to water crops or provide water to livestock is by pumping it out of the earth. However, pumps do consume electricity, which in turn, consumes more fossil fuels.
Solar pumps are gaining popularity because they do not use up electricity from the mains to pump water for irrigation. The governments around the world are realizing the potential of solar pumps and some have even started granting subsidies for farmers to install them cost-effectively.
7. Recycling organic waste
One of the best ways to improve water retention capabilities of soil is to add organic matter into it. Organic material has been found to increase the water retention capabilities of the soil.
Nowadays, many farmers use organic wastes from supermarkets to mix with the soil so that the crops can thrive in it without needing frequent water. As the temperatures rise, the soil starts to lose its water faster and this is a viable way to reduce organic wastes from shops and markets and also improve crop yields.
8. Planting more trees
This might sound like old-age advice, but planting tree is the best way to reduce damage from drought, improve the quality of the environment and increase the success of precipitation.
Many countries have started their efforts by turning arid lands into forests by planting trees and saplings.
Conclusion
Drought is one of the most damaging natural disasters that we have faced in recent years. By bringing innovative ideas and solutions, we can reduce the effects of droughts as well as put measures in place to prevent the occurrence of this natural disaster altogether.
