10 SCARIEST THINGS IN THE UNIVERSE

The Universe Is Full Of Scary Things. Here Are The 10 Scariest
By Himanshu Sharma,
Listverse, 17 September 2019.

As many of you would have heard by now, the universe is huge. So insanely huge that if we were to take a break from our mundane lives and just think about the sheer scale of things out there, we’d likely go crazy. That’s the reason most of us don’t bother with anything outside our immediate surroundings, as our brains are simply not equipped to handle thinking about stuff like that.

If we did think about it, as many people - like scientists, astronomers and stoned college students - do, we’d realize that the universe is full of scary things you’d probably never put in a children’s book. If we ventured into its darkest corners, we’d find it hiding many fascinating - and concerning - mysteries we’re yet to uncover.

10. The Higgs Boson Doomsday

We have a lot of doomsday scenarios going around, depending on where you are in the world. Many cultures believe that the end of the world would be dramatic, which is cool by us as long as we get to see some cool visuals.

The most dangerous and plausible doomsday scenarios, however, come from actual scientists themselves, the Higgs Boson Doomsday being one of them. Many of them - including Stephen Hawking - believe it could happen, or is already happening. It’d start with a bubble filled with fluctuating Higgs energy, which should remain consistent for the universe to stay stable. The bubble would spread like the vacuum, fundamentally reprogramming - and in some cases, disintegrating - atoms as it goes.

Some scientists think that it has already started, and the bubble may be on our way from the dark parts of the universe soon. Though others say that it’s well into the future, and we may be long gone before it makes its way here.

9. Galactic Cannibalism

Galactic cannibalism is the last type of cannibalism we want to hear about, even if general cannibalism is pretty gross, too. Just the idea that there are some bigger galaxies out there gobbling up other, smaller ones, and the possibility it may happen to us, is quite scary. There’s nothing to worry about, though, as it’s not going to happen in the near future. Many other galaxies out there, however, are currently being eaten up by a bigger one just because it had nothing better to do that day.

It’s not that far away from us, either. Andromeda - the galaxy most familiar to the layman and a part of our Local Group - actually devoured a sister galaxy of the Milky Way around two billion years ago. It’s also expected to do that with the Milky Way in around 4.5 billion years, but by that time humans would hopefully have developed travel between galaxies, or would have long died out. Whoever decides to stay, though, would be subjected to one hell of a light show.

8. The Outcast Supermassive Black Hole

If we knew about all the massive things going on in the universe, our lives may start to look a bit tiny. Some of those things, though, are so massive that they truly demonstrate how insignificant we actually are. One of them is a supermassive blackhole ejected from its galaxy.

Scientists calculated that it would have taken the same amount of energy as 100 million supernovas to throw a black hole into space. It’s not just any black hole either, but by far the biggest black hole on the move we’ve ever recorded. The energy came from the merger of two black holes at the center of the galaxy, because of course that’s a thing that keeps happening in space, too.

7. Rogue Black Holes

Out of all the things that can potentially go rogue, a black hole seems to be the worst. Black holes, as we all know, are super dense parts of space with unimaginably-high gravitational fields, so much so that even light can’t escape them. They eat up everything in their gravitational field, which is why it’s a good idea to stay away from them.

It’s a problem, though, when it starts moving. You see, much like everything else in the universe, black holes can find their own motion trajectories. In some instances, they start moving at immense speeds, eating up everything in their path.

It’s not a distant phenomenon, either; a black hole as big as Jupiter is currently dashing across the Milky Way. It was earlier assumed to be stationary, though according to some recent research, it’s really not.

6. Zombie Stars

Whatever is alive has to die at some point, something that applies to everything in the universe. The death of stars - as you may remember from science class - is one of the most interesting phenomena in the known universe. Every star we see in the sky is already dead and the light hasn’t reached us yet, or will die at some point in the future, including our sun. That’s the natural way of things, except when they decide to not do that.

In rare cases, stars may die and come back to life like nothing happened, something that baffles us as well as the scientists. They recently discovered zombie stars that should have died in their supernova stages but somehow survived, and are now hurtling across space with a renewed sense of life and adventure. We don’t quite understand them, which is why we hope they stay away from us.

5. The Galaxies Without Dark Matter

If you’ve spent your fair share of time on the internet and science forums, you’d know that the visible universe is a tiny fraction of the whole thing. An overwhelming majority of it is made up of something called dark matter. We could have come up with a more scientific name, but as we know absolutely nothing about it, ‘dark’ matter is the most accurate description of what we think it is. We know that it permeates through everything, and huge swathes of the universe are made up of it, though that’s about it.

Even more mysterious, however, is the galaxy without any dark matter. It was earlier postulated that whatever dark matter is, the universe needs it to keep things together. The galaxy, along with others like it, proves that dark matter isn’t essential to keep galaxies glued together, further deepening the mystery of the whole thing.

4. The Triple Galaxy Collision

No matter how boring our lives are, we can take some comfort in the fact that something interesting is going on in the universe at all times. From massive shows of light to dying stars, it’s certainly not a boring place. Some of those events, though, are so mind-bogglingly humungous that we’d rather get bored on a lazy afternoon here on Earth than find ourselves anywhere near them.

One of them is the rare collision of three galaxies, like the one we observed in 2007. While two galaxies collide with each other more often that we’d think, it’s rare to see three of them do it. What looks like just a blob of light in the photos is three massive clusters of stars merging with each other, all the while forming stars at a rapid rate (around 200 solar masses per year at the center).

3. The Mystery Of The Biggest Black Hole Ever Found

There are quite a few things in the universe we don’t understand, which is cool, as we can’t know everything. It’s a real setback, though, when we think we have figured something out, only to later find out that we hadn’t figured it out at all. Case in point; the brightest and biggest black hole found in the early universe.

It’s at the center of a quasar (bright huge thing with a black hole at its center) scientists only recently discovered. Known as SDSS J0100+2802, it’s as bright as 420 trillion Suns, and by far the most massive quasar we have ever discovered. We don’t know how it formed, as nothing in the early phase of the universe should have got so big, which also makes it the most mysterious black hole we know of.

2. The Coldest Place In The Universe

The universe is quite a cold place, as the heat of the stars is only enough to affect a tiny part of it. We know that it’s cold, though we don’t know the extent of how cold it can get. According to some scientists, the absolute coldest place in the known universe is the Boomerang Nebula (a nebula being a giant mass of gas and dust in space).

It’s so cold - clocking in at -457.87F on an average - that scientists have been trying to understand exactly what happened to it for a while now. And as per a recent study, there’s a perfectly good explanation for it. Apparently, it was ejected out after a star threw itself into another bigger star going through the last stages of its life, causing most of its matter to be ejected out as a cold burst. While it’s still quite a bit away from us to be of any danger, it’s one place we should all agree to never explore in case we do figure out interstellar travel.

1. Strange Matter

For something named as inconspicuously as ‘strange matter’, you wouldn’t think that it’d mean much. It sounds like something scientists came up with when they couldn’t explain something and wanted to keep it for later. Look it up online, though, and you’d realize it’s by far one of the weirdest parts of theoretical physics.

In essence, strange matter - which may contain a lot of types of particles - isn’t like anything we have seen before. You see, usual matter is made up of atoms with a nucleus, which contains the protons and neutrons. They’re in turn made up of quarks, which stay neatly packed in, give everything around us their unique properties. In strange matter, though, the quarks run free, with seemingly no boundaries or rules on what they’re supposed to do. It’s a completely different type of matter, and scarily, could turn everything it comes in contact with to its own properties. Yes, a tiny lump of strange matter anywhere in the universe could be on its way here now, completely changing - and essentially destroying - the very nature of matter around it.

Fortunately, strange matter hasn’t been proven to exist anywhere in the universe, so it’s only on paper for now. Unfortunately and more recently, though, scientists did find something very similar to what they think strange matter would be like.

7 APPS YOU SHOULD DELETE FROM YOUR PHONE RIGHT NOW

7 Apps You Should Delete from Your Phone Right Now
By Courtney Linder,
Popular Mechanics, 16 September 2019.

The smartphone, for all its life-changing magic, sucks. It sucks up your time, it sucks up your battery, and it sucks up your data. So we've compiled a list of the apps you should wipe from your phone, stat: those that track you, harm your mental health, and pretend to care about your privacy, but don't practice what they preach. Delete 'em now and never look back.

1. Angry Birds

Depressing, but true: Angry Birds isn't your friend, even after all of these years.

Released by Finish developer Rovio Entertainment back in 2009, the bird-launching game became an overnight success. What went wrong? Well, it all begins with Edward Snowden.

Early on, the infamous whistleblower claimed the hit mobile game was siphoning loads of data from users, but no one really took him seriously until it became national news that the U.S. National Security Agency and its British counterpart, the Government Communications Headquarters, actually were collecting and transmitting personal data about the game's users.

An ad platform hidden in some of the game's code let the company target advertisements to its users and, in an unfortunate twist of fate, that ad data was completely visible. That meant sensitive data like phone numbers, call logs, location, political information and even information about users' sexual orientation were public and available to those government agencies and beyond.

The developers say it's safe to use the app now, but maybe you should just take a break from shooting pigs and flinging birds for a bit.

2. GasBuddy

Credit: GasBuddy/Facebook

Unfortunately, heaps of useful and practical apps are some of the most serious threats to your own data security.

Take GasBuddy, for example. It's meant to help you save precious cash at the pump by letting you compare prices at gas stations nearby - wherever you are - but that also means it's gathering loads and loads of location data to make those calls.

You're hard-pressed to find many apps that don't ask you to turn on data-sharing permissions upon download, so what's so bad about this one, in particular? Well, here's where it gets worse: Last September, GasBuddy quietly changed its privacy policy right under your nose. Now it can track your geolocation everywhere you go.

“If you access the Service through a mobile device, and if your preferences are set to permit collection of the information, we will also automatically collect information about your driving habits, including, but not limited to, driving distance, speed, acceleration and braking habits," the privacy policy reads, in part.

Sure, just the gas station location data could be used to triage locations like where you work, live, and go out, but explicitly collecting data on your whereabouts in the background all the time feels like a full-on manifestation of Big Brother.

Imagine if GasBuddy experienced a data breach. Do you want a hacker to have information about where you live?

3. IPVanish VPN

Credit: IPVanish VPN

VPNs, or virtual private networks, rose in popularity over the last 10 years, but they've been around since 1996. Their purpose is to mask your internet activity and provide online privacy and anonymity by creating a private internet network from a public connection. VPNs mask your internet protocol (IP) location, making it virtually impossible to trace you. You can even make it look like you're browsing from Slovakia when you're actually in the U.S.

Ironically, a majority of VPN apps aren't safe, including one of the most popular providers, IPVanish VPN. YouTubers and other influencers heavily push the paid service because it has a lucrative affiliate program. However, in 2018, IPVanish was found to be logging customers' data and providing it to U.S. authorities, according to a YouTube review by Lee TV, a tech review vlog.

Weird, right? Since it was caught, IPVanish quit that practice, but it caused a myriad of trust issues for users, leading many to cancel their subscription and delete the app.

That relationship with the government, while kaput, begs the question: Who else could IPVanish be sharing data with, while not adequately notifying customers?

4. Facebook

Credit: Digitalpfade/Pixabay

Nobody should be surprised by this one, but if you haven't already, you should seriously consider deleting Facebook. Just like Instagram and Twitter, its users waste far too much time on the app, which often results in anxiety or depression, studies have found.

But the cybersecurity issues are of equal cause for concern. Last year's Cambridge Analytica scandal led to 87 million compromised profiles, whose contents were breached in a massive data leak that resulted in a U.S. Federal Trade Commission probe.

Not only does Facebook continue to have data breaches almost constantly (including one this month, already), but the company itself is also harvesting your data to build a profile of you for advertisers. Facebook's app can take photos and video, record audio, add and delete contacts, read your texts and your calendar, and more.

The app is also constantly running in the background and sending you annoying push notifications that drain your battery and data limits (if you don't have an unlimited data plan through your cell phone provider).

If you just can't quit, you can add a shortcut to the Facebook site to your phone's home screen on Android or bookmark under your favorites on iPhone to keep the data harvesting to a minimum. Just remember to close out the tab or screen when you're done.

5. Any and All of These Android Apps Infested with a New Form of Malware

Have you heard of the "Joker Malware" yet? Just this month, it turned out that two dozen Android apps have been infected with the malware, which is designed to sign you up for subscription services without your permission. That could cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars if you don't routinely check your bank and credit card statements.

“So far, we have detected it in 24 apps with over 472,000 installs in total,” cybersecurity researcher Aleksejs Kuprins at CSIS Security Group, wrote in a Medium blog.

Kuprins says the virus “steals the victim’s SMS messages [and] the contact list and device info.”

Some of the code's notes, he found, were written in Chinese, so that could indicate where the threat originated.

Once the malware was identified, Google moved the impacted apps from its store, but if you've already purchased or downloaded one of the following apps, not only should you uninstall them immediately, but you should also check your bank and credit card statements to identify any fraud.

Here is a complete list of the known affected apps:

- Advocate Wallpaper
- Age Face
- Altar Message
- Antivirus Security - Security ScanBeach
- CameraBoard picture editing
- Certain Wallpaper
- Climate SMS
- Collate Face Scanner
- Cute Camera
- Dazzle Wallpaper
- Declare Message
- Display Camera
- Great VPN
- Humour Camera
- Ignite Clean
- Leaf Face Scanner
- Mini Camera
- Print Plan Scan
- Rapid Face Scanner
- Reward Clean
- Ruddy SMS
- Soby Camera
- Spark Wallpaper

6.  CamScanner

Credit: Screenshot Google Play

Unless you work from home, you probably don't have a fax machine or printer with a built-in scanner readily available. So when your boss or landlord asks you to sign a document, scan it, and send it back, that's where apps like CamScanner come in.

The app lets you take a photo of a document and instantly turn it into a PDF. Cool, right? Of course - until the malware it's been infected with crawls into your phone.

In June, researchers at the Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky found malware in several different versions of the CamScanner app.

The researchers described the malware in a blog post:

"As the name suggests, the module is a Trojan Dropper. That means the module extracts and runs another malicious module from an encrypted file included in the app’s resources. This “dropped” malware, in turn, is a Trojan Downloader that downloads more malicious modules depending on what its creators are up to at the moment. For example, an app with this malicious code may show intrusive ads and sign users up for paid subscriptions.”

Yikes.

It looks like the malware issue has been resolved, since the CamScanner app is back on the Google Play store. But that betrayal of trust is enough reason to turn to a similar app that does the same thing, anyway. Check out Adobe Scan or Microsoft Office Lens for a safer alternative.

7. YouVersion Bible

Credit: Screenshot YouVersion/YouTube

It's an incredibly simple app with the full text of the Bible. What could possibly go wrong?

The most popular Bible app, YouVersion, is installed on about 300 million phones as of this year and, apparently, it's the app's divine right to collect all your data.

YouVersion can connect and disconnect to WiFi whenever it wants, modify the content stored on your phone, track your location, and read all of your contacts. And it's probably not to let a higher power know what you're doing. It's most likely to serve you ads.

A rep from YouVersion told ExpressVPN that you have nothing to worry about. Apparently, the app's permissions are meant to ensure the “best possible experience for our users” and that the developer, a non-profit, “will not sell users’ data or personally identifiable information.”

We're not convinced. You know what won't steal your data? Books.

10 GROSS FACTS YOU NEVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT ROACHES

You Never Wanted to Know These Gross Facts About Roaches
By Gregory Myers,
Toptenz, 9 September 2019.

Cockroaches are one of the most hated creatures on the planet, and disgust and horrify us despite being a vital part of the overall ecological cycle. Regardless, most people would not want their houses infested with them, and like to spend as little time around them or their filth as possible. Unfortunately, since they are an important part of the food chain and here to stay, we have to know about them, and over the years much myth has built up about them, and many new facts have been discovered. In today’s article, we will go over 10 shocking and disgusting facts you never wanted to know about cockroaches.

10. Roaches Can Survive For About A Week Without Their Heads In Place

Most people are creeped out by cockroaches, but they can get far worse than you can even imagine. In most fantasy novels, even some of the nastiest monsters are over and done with as soon as you get a good, clean decapitation. However, if you take the head off a cockroach, it can keep running around and grossing you out for quite some time - although it cannot do much else. The reason for this is the unique way a cockroach’s body works, which allows it to not need a head for silly things like breathing.

The cockroach can actually breathe though the segments in its body, so it can survive pretty much indefinitely on the air front. It also doesn’t have to worry about bleeding out because it has an open circulatory system. However, this does not mean the cockroach can survive forever. It cannot eat or drink without a head, and thus will only last for about a week or so before it runs out of water stores. During this time, all it can really do is hide in a dark corner and wait to die, unable to eat, drink or even scream in its tiny cockroach voice.

9. A Girl From Oklahoma Collects And Breeds Giant Cockroaches…For Fun

A young girl from Oklahoma was on TV a few years back on a show that showcased people’s most bizarre obsessions, hobbies, or habits. In this case, the girl was seriously into collecting cockroaches and keeping them as pets. She started off with just a few males, so they couldn’t breed, but eventually did get some females and started breeding them. Now, in the videos these cockroaches look absolutely gigantic, and that is because they are, but these are not normal cockroaches. Apparently the cockroaches she collects are Madagascar hissing cockroaches, which can get up to three inches long, and like to be petted.

She sometimes keeps them in egg cartons, or glass cages lined with Vaseline. Her parents are held hostage by these horrible creatures, and seem to put up with it because their daughter loves the things, but only just barely put up with it. They keep a bearded dragon to get any who may escape, but that is probably not that much comfort to the parents, or of those who fear the thought of all of those cockroaches escaping, breeding out of control, and creating a three inch cockroach-fest all over the country.

8. Cockroaches Are Resistant To Radiation, But Probably Not As Much As You Think

One of the most persistent beliefs about nuclear apocalypses is that the only things that would survive would be cockroaches and Twinkies. However, both of these beliefs are quite mistaken. For starters, Twinkies really only have a shelf life of a few weeks at best, as they actually do use mostly fresh, real ingredients even if they might seem artificial in taste and texture, and cockroaches are not nearly as resistant to radiation as you might think.

The Mythbusters once tested out the idea about cockroaches surviving radiation, and found that while the cockroach did do about 10 times better than humans, its resistance was still not strong enough to protect it if it was relatively close to a blast. In actuality, a lot of insects do better than us at dealing with radiation, but cockroaches are not really that close to the best at it. Some relatively common beetles, as well as some of the nastiest and most dangerous wasp species, can resist radiation notably better than the cockroach. Of course what this means is that in general, there probably would be a decent amount of insects surviving after an apocalypse, and you might even see a huge surge in wasp populations worldwide.

7. Some Cockroach Species, Even In America, Can Actually Fly, Or At Least Glide

Most people hate cockroaches enough just scurrying quickly across the ground, but a lot of people hate them even more when they can fly. Now, some of you are probably taken aback and horrified at the thought of flying cockroaches, and that’s because you are lucky enough to have not had to deal with them. The truth, however, is that many cockroach species can fly, even in the United States.

On top of that, some species of cockroaches that are not particularly strong flyers still actually glide a decent amount of the time to get down from high places, and could accidentally land on your head or shoulders. Now, while this may be cold comfort to some, most cockroaches never bother to fly even if they are capable, because they find their incredible speed on the ground to be more than fast enough to get away, and it also attracts less unwanted attention from flying predators. The truth is that in flight they are kind of ungainly, but on the ground they have been clocked as fast as 59 inches per second, and the children can be almost as fast as the full grown parents.

6. Cockroaches Can Hold Their Breath For 5 to 7 Minutes

Many wild sources on the internet claim that cockroaches can hold their breath for an incredible, and horrifying, 40 minutes. Now, this is actually absolute codswallop. A cockroach can only hold their breath for about five to seven minutes long, although this is actually still quite horrifying for a creature of its size, now that we come to think of it. As you are probably now imagining, any time you tried to flush a cockroach down a pipe with water and thought you had the problem solved, that was really just a temporary sendoff - that cockroach will almost certainly survive and be right back.

And of course this is the biggest use cockroaches seem to have for their breath-holding capabilities, which is to come into your house using water sources as a channel to get from one place to another. However, cockroaches have also been observed holding their breath when it is not necessary at all - or in other words, when they are not surrounded by water. It was also observed that roaches tended to hold their breath more in drier environments, which led to the conclusion that they were likely holding their breath in order to conserve water. As far as we can tell, the theory holds up, as roaches seem to use less of their water stores while holding their breath.

5. Roaches Are Attracted To Your Alcoholic Drinks, Including Your Beer, Not Just Cocktails

Of course roaches are attracted to sugar, just like ants and many other insects, and will come out and take a look at your food - although they are also attracted to pretty much any food in general. However, it seems for some reason that they are actually more attracted to beer than they are your cocktails. Exterminators are not exactly sure why this is, they believe it must be some combination of the sugar, the hops and the fermentation that particularly attracts them - or maybe like many creatures they like to get drunk.

Regardless, many people have used this to their advantage, as they have found beer is an incredibly reliable way to get the attention of cockroaches. For this reason, people will trap them with glass jars with some beer in the bottom, usually lined with something like Vaseline so they cannot get back out again, and drown in the beer they are guzzling. Of course, for some hard drinkers out there, that doesn’t sound like such a bad way to die.

4. Cockroaches Can Be A Major Trigger For People With Allergies Or Asthma

One thing many wonder while Googling about these nasty creatures is whether cockroaches being a huge problem for allergy sufferers is a myth, or a fact. And, unfortunately, it is indeed a fact that cockroaches can be a huge trigger for anyone with allergies or asthma. Cockroaches spread disease, but they also leave droppings and a lot of molted casings and other such bits in their wake. These can get in the air, or over time help create more and worse dust, and be a big contributor to people who suffer from respiratory issues.

If you live in a house your best bet is just to keep things really clean, and get roaches out fast if you have any enter. If you live in an apartment, sometimes they will come by your house because the neighbors have a problem, but again, being clean and tidy is your best defense. If you have people in your home who suffer from allergies or asthma, regularly vacuuming and dusting, and proper cleaning in general, will keep them safe not just from cockroaches, but from any other allergen triggers that might make their lives miserable.

3. Adult Cockroaches Can Survive For About A Month Without Any Food

As we mentioned earlier, a cockroach can survive without a head for about a week. And the reason it can only survive for about a week is because it can only survive for so long without food and water. Most scientists put a cockroach’s best bet at surviving without water to be about seven or maybe 10 days if they hold their breath, start out well-hydrated, are in a moist environment, and really conserve air and water. However, what if our hypothetical headless cockroach could somehow remain hydrated? How long would he have to survive just sitting, waiting to die without food?

Well, according to entomologists who have extensively studied roaches, under ideal conditions, a cockroach could probably survive for about a month without any food at all. Now, cockroach egg laying cycles are about 30 days, so a group of cockroaches that was really starved for food, but was already inside your walls, could potentially last long enough to lay yet another brood, even if you leave out nothing for them that they can use as an easy and ready source of food.

2. Sometimes Cockroaches Decide That Your Ear Is a Really Good Place To Hunker Down

One of the most horrifying things that can happen to anyone is getting a bug stuck inside your ear. Unfortunately, this is actually a relatively common occurrence, with another story seeming to pop up in the news every month or so. In some cases, the cockroach gets stuck and dies, and in other cases it manages to actually lay eggs in the ear before dying and being extracted from the poor person who has to deal with this nightmare. Now, some may be wondering why cockroaches like our ears so much. Are they just dumb? In reality, the truth is a lot more scientific.

For starters, roaches like warm, damp, humid places that they can crawl into for a safe place to hide, and the ear of a quietly sleeping, unmoving human actually fits all of that criteria quite nicely. On top of that, the cockroaches are attracted to volatile fatty acids, which appear in some fermented foods, but can also be released by the waxy buildup in your ears. In other words, the cockroach may not just be going into your ear because it thinks it will be a good place to hide for a time, but because it is looking to make a delicious banquet of the golden waxy substance inside your ears.

1. Cockroaches Will Eat Literally Anything - Cleanliness Will Not Necessarily Save You

While many people fear bedbugs because they know the things just want to eat human and other mammal blood, they tend to be a little less afraid of cockroaches. They believe that if they keep everything properly clean and spotless, there will be no reason for the beastly creatures to ever come anywhere near them, and certainly no way for them to truly infest the place. However, the truth is that cockroaches will feed on almost anything you can imagine, as long as it had once been organic matter in some form. To make matters worse, any decay can attract them, and what they consider food could be many different random things that you wouldn’t imagine any creature would want to eat.

Which brings us to our final point. There is a good reason to hate and fear roaches much more now, as they can add a hideous new member to their awful, awful, family. It turns out that after recent discovery and much deliberation, the Entomological Association of America has come out with a statement explaining that termites - those eaters of the wood that makes up much of your house - are actually relatives of our disgusting friend the cockroach.

7 SIMPLE MATH EQUATIONS THAT WENT VIRAL AND DIVIDED THE INTERNET

7 Simple Math Equations That Went Viral and Divided the Internet
By Chris Young,
Interesting Engineering, 11 September 2019.

Every now and then a mathematics problem is shared online that goes viral due, in large part, to the fact that it seems no one can agree on the answer

Great minds come together, and still, their calculations do not provide the same results. Here are the real answers to some of the equations that have had Internet users collectively scratching their heads.

1. 8 ÷ 2 (2 + 2) = ?

Is the answer 16, or is it 1?

Credit: #em!!?/Twitter

The equation went viral after Twitter user @pjmdolI posted it over the summer [as shown above].

As per Insider, those who got 1 as the answer were using an outdated version of the order of operations.

The above is a detailed description from MindYourDecisions on YouTube.

2. 9 - 3 ÷ 1/3 + 1 = ?

In 2016, a test found that only 60% of Japanese 20-year-olds were able to solve this equation, down from 90% in the 80s.

Once again, the problem stems from the order of operations.

The most common mistake, Presh Talkwalkar of MindYourDecision and author of The Joy of Game Theory says, is writing the 1/3 without parentheses when people use a calculator to solve it.

3. 6^2 ÷ 2(3) + 4 = ?

Is it 10 or is it 58?

Two different ways of calculating the answer provide different results.

Once again, as GeniusInsomniac points out (video below), the moral of the story is the importance of knowing the correct order of operations.

It goes like this: parentheses, exponents, multiplication and/or division (whichever comes first), addition and/or subtraction (whichever comes first).

4. 6 - 1 x 0 + 2 ÷ 2 = ?

Once again, Presh Talwalkar settles the math debate. A seemingly simple math problem had people strongly disagreeing over whether the answer was 7 or 1.

The correct answer is 7. Why? You guessed it: the order of operations.

5. 60 ÷ 5 (7 - 5) = ?

Talwalkar points out that the above equation provides different results depending on what calculator is used.

The unambiguous answer, he says, is 24, based on the modern interpretation of PEMDAS/BODMAS.

6. 230 - 220 ÷ 2 = ?

Of course, answers are not always clear cut. Much in the same way that language can be interpreted in different ways, so can math problems.

That's why a math Ph.D. professor and Presh Talwalkar from MindYourDecisions came up with different answers to this problem. Talwalkar said 120 and the Ph.D. professor said 5.

7. 7 + 7 ÷ 7 + 7 x 7 - 7 = ?

Yet another lesson in order of operations. This equation really brings it down to the basics.

Talwalkar emphasizes the importance of the acronyms PEMDAS or BODMAS for remembering the correct order.
