10 Unconventional Uses Of Nanotechnology

It’s hard to envision the future without the presence of nanotechnologies. Manipulating matter at an atomic and sub-molecular level has paved the way for major breakthroughs in chemistry, biology, and medicine. Yet, the unfolding applications of nanotechnology are far broader and more diverse than what we’ve imagined.

10. Film Making


Without the invention of the scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) in the 1980s, the field of nanotechnology might have remained science fiction. With its atomic precision the STM has enabled physicists to study the structure of matter in a way that was impossible with conventional microscopes.

The astonishing potential of STM was demonstrated by researchers at IBM when they created A Boy and His Atom, which was the world’s smallest animated film. It was produced by moving individual atoms on a copper surface.

The 90-second movie depicts a boy made of carbon monoxide molecules playing with a ball, dancing, and bouncing on a trampoline. Consisting of 202 frames, the animation takes action in a space as tiny as 1/1000 the size of a single human hair. To make the movie, researchers utilized a unique feature that comes with the STM: an electrically charged and extremely sharp stylus with a tip made of one atom. The stylus is capable of sensing the exact positions of the carbon molecules on the animation surface (which is the sheet of copper in this case). Therefore, it can be used to create images of the molecules as well as move them into new positions.

9. Oil Recovery

The global expenditure for oil exploration has risen exponentially during the past decade. However, efficiency in oil recovery has remained a major issue. When petroleum companies shut down an oil well, less than half of the oil in the reservoir is extracted. The rest is left behind because it is trapped in the rock where it is too expensive to recover. Luckily, with help from nanotechnology, scientists in China have discovered a way to work around this.

The solution is enhancing an existing drilling technique. The original technique involves injecting water into the rock pores where oil is located. This displaces the oil and forces it out. However, this method reveals its limitation as soon as the oil in the easily reached pores has been extracted. By then, water begins emerging from the well instead of oil.

To prevent this, Chinese researchers Peng and Ming Yuan Li have come up with the idea of infusing the water with nanoparticles that can plug the passages between the rock pores. This method is intended to make the water take narrower paths into the pores that contain oil and force the oil out. With successful field studies conducted in China, this method has proven highly efficient in recovering the 50 percent of the black gold that otherwise remains out of reach.

8. High-Resolution Displays

The images on computer screens are presented via tiny dots called pixels. Regardless of their sizes and shapes, the number of pixels on a screen has remained a determining factor of image quality. With traditional displays, however, more pixels meant larger and bulkier screens - an obvious limitation.

While companies were busy selling their colossal screens to consumers, scientists from Oxford University have discovered a way to create pixels that are just a few hundred nanometres across. This was achieved by exploiting the properties of a phase-change material called GST (a material found in thermal management products). In the experiment, the scientists used seven-nanometre-thick layers of GST sandwiched between transparent electrodes. Each layer - just 300 by 300 nanometres in size - acts as a pixel that can be electrically switched on and off. By passing electrical current through layers, the scientists were able to produce images with fair quality and contrast.

The nano-pixels will serve a variety of purposes where the conventional pixels have become impractical. For instance, their tiny size and thickness will make them a great choice for technologies such as smart glasses, foldable screens, and synthetic retinas. Another advantage of nano-pixel displays is their lower energy consumption. Unlike the existing displays that constantly refresh all pixels to form images, the GST-layer-based displays only refresh the part of the display that actually changes, saving power.

7. Colour-Changing Paint

While experimenting on strings of gold nanoparticles, scientists at the University of California have stumbled upon an astonishing observation. They’ve noticed that the colour of gold changes when a string of its particles is stretched or retracted, producing what one of the scientists described as a beautiful bright blue that morphs into purple and then red. The finding has inspired the scientists to create sensors out of gold nanoparticles that change colours when pressure is applied to them.

To produce the sensors, gold nanoparticles have to be added to a flexible polymer film. When the film is pressed, it stretches and causes particles to separate and the colour to change. Pressing lightly turns the sensor purple while pressing harder turns it red. The scientists noticed this intriguing property not only in gold particles but also in silver where the particles change into yellow when stretched.

The sensors could serve a variety of purposes. For instance, they could be incorporated into furniture, such as couches or beds, to assess sitting or sleeping positions. Despite being made of gold, the sensor is tiny enough to overcome the cost issue.

6. Phone Charging

Whether it’s an iPhone, Samsung, or different type of phone, every smartphone that leaves the factory comes with two notorious downsides: battery life and the time it takes to recharge. While the first is still a universal problem, scientists from the city of Ramat Gan in Israel have managed to tackle the second problem by creating a battery that requires only 30 seconds to recharge.

The breakthrough was attributed to a project related to Alzheimer’s disease that was carried out by researchers from the University of Tel Aviv. The researchers discovered that the peptide molecules that shorten the brain’s neurons and cause disease have a very high capacitance (the ability to preserve electric charges). This finding has contributed to the foundation of StoreDot, a company that focuses on nanotechnologies that target consumer products. With help from researchers, StoreDot has developed NanoDots - technology that harnesses the peptides’ properties to improve the battery life of smartphones. The company demonstrated a prototype of its battery in Microsoft’s ThinkNext event. Using a Samsung Galaxy S3 phone, the battery was charged from zero to full in less than a minute.

5. Sophisticated Drug Delivery

Treatments for diseases such as cancer can be prohibitively expensive and, in some cases, too late. Fortunately, several medical firms from around the world are researching cheap and effective ways of treating illnesses. Among them is Immusoft, a company that aims to revolutionize how medicines are delivered to our bodies.

Instead of spending billions of dollars on drugs and therapy programs, Immusoft believes that we can engineer our bodies to produce drugs by themselves. With help from the immune system, cells of a patient can be altered to receive new genetic information that allows them to make their own medicine. The genetic information can be delivered via nano-sized capsules injected into the body.

The new method hasn’t been tested out on a human patient yet. Nevertheless, Immusoft and other institutions have reported successful experiments conducted on mice. If proven effective on humans, the method will significantly reduce the treatment and therapy costs of cardiovascular diseases and various other illnesses.

4. Molecular Communication

There are circumstances in which electromagnetic waves, the soul of global telecommunication, become unusable. Think of an electromagnetic pulse that could render communication satellites, and every form of technology relying on them, useless. We are quite familiar with such terrifying scenarios from doomsday movies. Furthermore, this issue has been contemplated for years by researchers from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom and the York University in Canada before ultimately coming up with an unexpected solution.

The researchers observed how some animal species, particularly insects, employ pheromones to communicate across long distances. After collecting the data, they were able to develop a communication method in which messages are encoded in the molecules of evaporated alcohol. The researchers successfully demonstrated the new technique using rubbing alcohol as a signalling chemical and “O Canada” as their first message.

Two devices were employed with this method including a transmitter to encode and send the message and a receiver to decode and display it. The method works by keying in a text message on the transmitter using Arduino Uno (an open-source microcontroller) that comes with an LCD screen and buttons. The controller then converts the text input into a binary sequence which is read by an electronic sprayer containing the alcohol. Once the binary message is read, the sprayer converts it into a controlled set of sprays where “1” represents a spray and “0” equals no spray. The alcohol in the air is then detected by the receiver which consists of a chemical sensor and a microcontroller. The receiver reads and converts the binary data back to text before displaying it on a screen.

The researchers were able to send and receive the “O Canada” message across several feet of open space. As a result, a number of scientists have expressed confidence in the method. They believe it might be helpful in environments such as underground tunnels or pipelines where electromagnetic waves become useless.

3. Computer Storage

During the past few decades, computers have grown exponentially in both processing power and storage capacity. This phenomenon was accurately predicted by James Moore around 50 years ago and later became widely known as Moore’s Law. However, many scientists - including the physicist Michio Kaku - believe that Moore’s Law is falling apart. This is due to the fact that computer power cannot keep up with the exponential rise of the existing manufacturing technologies.

Though Kaku was emphasizing processing power, the same concept applies to storage capacity. Luckily, it’s not the end of the road. A team of researchers from RMIT University in Melbourne are now exploring the alternatives. Led by Dr. Sharath Sriram, the team is on the verge of developing storage devices that mimic the way the human brain stores information. The researchers took the first step and built a nano film that is chemically designed to preserve electric charges in on and off states. The film, which is 10,000 times thinner than a human hair, might become the cornerstone for developing memory devices that replicate the neural networks of the brain.

2. Nano Art

The promising development of nanotechnology has earned a great deal of admiration from the scientific community. Nevertheless, breakthroughs in nanotechnology are no longer confined to medicine, biology, and engineering. Nano art is an emerging field that allows us to view the tiny world under the microscope from an entirely new perspective.

As its name implies, nano art is a combination of art and nanoscience practiced by a small number of scientists and artists. Among them is John Hart, a mechanical engineer from the University of Michigan, who made a nano portrait of President Barack Obama. The portrait, which was named Nanobama, was created to honour the President when he was a candidate during the 2008 presidential elections. Each face in Nanobama measures just half a millimetre across and is entirely sculpted from 150 nanotubes. To produce the portraits, Hart first created a line drawing of the iconic “Hope” poster. He then printed the drawing on a glass plate coated with the nanoparticles needed to grow nanotubes. Using a high-temperature furnace, it was only a matter of time before the portrait was ready for a photo shoot.

1. Record Breaking

Humanity has always sought to build the strongest, fastest, and largest things. But, when it comes to building the smallest, nanotechnology emerges on the stage. Among the tiniest things ever created using nanotechnology is a book called Teeny Ted From Turnip which is currently regarded as the world’s smallest printed book. Produced in the Nano Imaging Laboratory at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada, the book measures just 70 micrometres by 100 micrometres and is made of letters carved on 30 crystalline silicon pages.

The book’s story, written by Malcolm Douglas Chaplin, features Teeny Ted and his triumph at the turnip contest at the annual county fair. Over 100 copies of the book have been published. But to buy one of them you will need a deep pocket - a single book costs over US$15,000. An electron microscope will also be required to read it, adding even more to the cost.

The public was outraged when it was revealed that Facebook had manipulated some of its users’ news feeds to see if Facebook can make us happy or sad. But previous studies by other researchers have already shown how Facebook twists our psyches.

10. Facebook Is Creating A Generation Of Spin Doctors

Especially for the 20-somethings who’ve grown up with Facebook, many of them create posts and profiles of themselves that are much more optimistic and upbeat than reality. They portray themselves as happier, thinner, more popular and more accomplished than they actually are. They know these images of themselves will be there for a long time. They deliberately spin their stories to look good.

According to Victoria Mapplebeck from Royal Holloway, University of London, they’re narcissists…self-centred individuals with an excessive need for admiration. They want other people to know every detail of their lives, including personal issues that normally would be private.

Mapplebeck wonders if these Facebook users really care what they read online about other people’s lives. She’s particularly concerned that Facebook wants to turn our emotions into clickable options. For now, there’s just a “like” button. But Facebook may add a “sympathy” button to deal with bad news like break-ups and illness.

Mapplebeck questions whether social media is changing the way we grow up - from how we spin our life stories to how we shortcut interactions with friends through online media rather than phoning or meeting in person. In a New York Times article, “The Facebook Resisters,” Ashleigh Elser, 24, confirms the interaction change. “I wasn’t calling my friends anymore,” she said. “I was just seeing their pictures and updates and felt like that was really connecting to them.”

9. Facebook Photos May Lead To Eating Disorders

A study published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders suggests that the more time young women spend on Facebook, the more likely they are to develop eating disorders. That’s because Facebook is so appearance-oriented that a young woman is more likely to dislike her body image.

The 960 college women who participated in the study often compared their photos to pictures of their friends. They untagged photos of themselves they disliked. And they were overly concerned with receiving “likes” and comments on their status updates.

When these Facebook users were compared to a control group, it took just 20 minutes of Facebook usage for a young woman to have heightened concern and anxiety over her weight and body shape. The researchers pointed out that these emotions increase the risk that these young women will develop eating disorders.

Another study found that the obsession with appearance is potentially more dangerous on social media than on TV and in magazines because young women know the people on social media. That makes the comparisons harder to deal with.

In a proud2bme.org article, “How Does Social Media Affect Your Body Image,” Kirby, 18, sums it up like this: “When I look at other people’s photo albums, the comparing is automatic. I end up feeling like crap.”

8. Facebook Affects The Closeness Of Our Friendships

The way you communicate with a friend on Facebook may affect the closeness of your relationship to that friend. According to research from Western Illinois University, if you only broadcast status updates, then your friend may feel like he or she is just one of the crowd held at arm’s length. Also, if your friend doesn’t post a lot of mass status updates to Facebook, then he or she won’t like it when you do.

But if you leave condolences or congratulations on your friend’s wall - in other words, take actions that are uniquely related to that person - then you’ll make that friend feel closer to you and more satisfied with your friendship. Your friends crave individual attention online to feel like you care.

This researcher found that Facebook itself doesn’t necessarily help or harm your friendships. It’s how you communicate with your friends on Facebook that affects the closeness of your relationships.

7. Many Facebook Users Who Publicly Support Charities Don’t Give

Many charities believe that connecting with donors online leads to more dedicated support. But researchers from the University of British Columbia found that people who publicly supported a charity online were actually less likely to pull out their wallets and donate later.

The researchers call these people “slacktivists.” Slacktivists take the easy way out by appearing to support a cause without really doing anything in terms of giving time or money to help.

This study showed that people who endorsed a cause by joining a Facebook group or by some other free public means were less likely to give a monetary gift later. But people who privately supported a cause - for example, by signing a private petition - were more likely to give to that charity later.

These British Columbia researchers believe the slacktivists just want to look good in public. But despite the slacktivism issue, another research group, SINTEF, found that most Facebook users in their more recent study believe that “liking” a charitable cause on Facebook can make a difference and encourage others to show support, too.

In 2013, UNICEF Sweden launched the “Likes Don’t Save Lives” campaign showing that likes won’t pay for food and clothes. Their goal was to raise money for vaccines and to make potential donors aware that likes aren’t important. Their video, “Like us on Facebook, and we will vaccinate zero children against polio,” went viral. UNICEF Sweden didn’t share their monetary results from the campaign.

6. Facebook Influences Risky Behaviour By Teenagers

Researchers at the University of Southern California surveyed over 1500 10th-grade students in Los Angeles County about their use of tobacco, alcohol and social media. Half of the students were boys; half were girls. Almost 30% had smoked and over 50% had consumed at least one alcoholic drink. About a third of these teens had at least one friend who smoked or drank.

The researchers found that the number of a teenager’s online friends didn’t really matter that much. It was merely the exposure to pictures of friends smoking or drinking that influenced the viewing teen’s behaviour. But surprisingly, the teenagers with close friends who abstained from drinking were even more likely to be influenced by greater exposure to online pictures of partying.

According to Columbia University’s National Centre on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA), when compared to teens who aren’t on social media, the teens who use social sites are 5 times more likely to smoke and 3 times more likely to drink.

As an example of social media influence, a wild Internet drinking game for teens called NekNomination spread quickly in 2014 on Facebook and Twitter. The kids took videos of themselves downing strong drinks in strange and sometimes dangerous circumstances like jumping in a river afterward. Jonny Byrne, 19, died that way in the Irish countryside.

With 80% of America’s teenagers using Facebook and other social networking sites to communicate with each other, this is a serious source of peer pressure. Researchers suggest that we teach young people about the dangers of posting these kinds of pictures online.

5. People Who Aren’t On Facebook Feel Meaningless

With Facebook usage so widespread as a way to keep in touch with friends and family, researchers from the University of Queensland believe it’s become a way to define our sense of social belonging.

These researchers performed two social experiments to see how lurking (which is passive participation on Facebook) and deliberate shunning (which occurs when the user receives no feedback on his or her posts) affect a participant’s sense of self-worth.

The first experiment on lurking divided a group into those who actively posted on Facebook and those who lurked by passively watching the status of their friends. After two days, the lurkers experienced a negative effect on their sense of self-worth.

The second experiment on shunning had all members of a group actively posting on Facebook. But half the group didn’t know that they were deliberately shunned - receiving no feedback on their posts - to see how they would react.

Both the lurkers from the first experiment and the shunned from the second experiment felt excluded, invisible and less worthy as individuals than active posters who were engaged with other users.

4. Unfriending Elicits A Rollercoaster Of Emotions

Researchers from the University of Colorado studied who was most likely to be unfriended on Facebook and how a person would respond emotionally to being unfriended.

They found that the top five types of people most likely to be unfriended were high school friends, other, friends of a friend, work friends and common interest friends. Co-workers get unfriended more often for the things they do in the real world rather than their online postings. The most unfriended, high school friends, are more likely to offend us because we grow apart in terms of political or religious beliefs.

People’s reactions to being unfriended ranged from surprise and anxiety to amusement and sadness. You’re more likely to be sad and anxious if you felt close to the other person at the time of unfriending and if you monitored that person’s postings closely. In a Mashable, “Why Being Unfriended on Facebook Hurts,” Ben, 13, says that it makes him sad to be unfriended because Facebook is a part of his identity.

But here’s the surprise finding: unfriending is more likely to occur to friends who were once close than to mere acquaintances. The researchers point out that it’s easy to maintain a large network of friends on Facebook. So if someone deliberately unfriends you, it’s especially hurtful.

3. Facebook Friends Can Make You Feel Awkward And Ashamed

Almost every participant in a study by Northwestern University had experienced “face threats” in the six months prior to the study. These threats weren’t threats of violence or anything like that; they were threats to self-esteem and privacy. For example, if a friend posts information about you that you don’t want everyone to know, that’s a threat. Or maybe someone posts a picture of you that they think is funny, but you find to be embarrassing. Again, that’s a threat.

The researchers wanted to see how strongly people reacted to face threats. As it turns out, Facebook users who were concerned about their online reputations or had a wider circle of friends accessing their page (e.g., friends, family and co-workers) were more likely to be embarrassed or anxious about what other people post about them on Facebook.

Ultimately, the researchers concluded that people should consider a friend’s Facebook audience before posting any comments or content to their page.

2. Moods Are Contagious On Facebook

Before Facebook’s own experiment, a study from the University of California at San Diego looked at data on over 100 million Facebook users to see if moods are contagious on Facebook.

The researchers realized that rainy weather increases the number of negative posts and decreases the number of positive posts by Facebook users. So by analyzing the changes in those users’ emotional expression according to the weather, the researchers concluded that moods do spread online, especially positive expressions of emotions.

Another study published more recently by social scientists at Cornell University, the University of California at San Francisco and Facebook itself, manipulated the emotional tone of news feeds for almost 700,000 Facebook users to measure “emotional contagion.”

These researchers famously found that Facebook users react more positively for days to positive emotion updates from friends. On the flip side, users who had fewer emotional posts in their news feeds withdrew emotionally for a few days. These findings suggest that the emotions communicated on social media can become contagious and influence other people’s moods.

1. Facebook Has Changed The Face Of Death

Facebook has even changed the way we mourn. While it may be comforting to have digital reminders of your loved ones, there can also be negative consequences.

Until social media became popular, public mourning was declining in western cultures as social and religious traditions changed. But family and friends may not be able to control the privacy of their mourning any longer. While the researchers at Lancaster University didn’t have any answers, they did spotlight some of the challenges of death in the age of social media.

For example, how do you take custody of the online remnants of someone’s life - such as emails, videos and digital photos - that can’t be divided up, stored or sold like old jewellery? If someone’s online remains are searchable, can videos and status updates be reinterpreted after death in a way that can haunt the living?

This can be especially unsettling if someone commits suicide or is murdered. Depending on what happens, every online communication of your loved one may become national or worldwide news, dissected by “experts” who never knew that person.

For the family of Skylar Neese in Morgantown, West Virginia, Facebook photos and tweets posted by Skylar and her two “best friends” had to be evaluated and re-evaluated when those best friends were found to have stabbed her to death in 2012.

Then there’s the case of Elliot Rodger, 22, who went on a shooting spree in Isla Vista, California, in 2014 to take revenge on women for rejecting him. His Facebook post that he was a virgin was met with derision. Rodger portrayed himself as a frustrated loner on Facebook and a blog and in his YouTube videos. Echoing a question that many had, ABC News’ David Muir asked, “Were there warning signs the parents should have seen?” His father says they knew Elliot was troubled, but they never expected homicide to be the result. Upset parents of Rodger’s victims also used Facebook to mourn the loss of their children.

A rocket roars off the launchpad, Saturn mixes its upper atmosphere, and Titan mimics the crescent moon in this week's best space pictures.

1. Martian Mosaic

The Mast Camera on the Mars rover Curiosity snapped six pictures of the bedrock at Alexander Hills on November 23.

Researchers stitched the images together into a mosaic to help them study in detail an area six feet (1.8 meters) across. The colour in this image has been adjusted so that the surface appears as it would in normal daylight on Earth.

2. Preparing for Flight

Arms close around a Soyuz TMA-15M spacecraft in Kazakhstan in preparation for its November 24 launch to the International Space Station.

The rocket will deliver a Russian cosmonaut, a U.S. astronaut, and a flight engineer from the European Space Agency to the ISS to begin a five-and-a-half-month mission.

3. A Furnace's Spiral

A barred spiral galaxy, named NGC 986, resides in the Fornax, or Furnace, constellation about 56 million light-years from Earth. Bar-shaped structures composed of stars cut across about two-thirds of spiral galaxies.

In this close-up view, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, young stars glow light blue. The galaxy's central area is also awash in the illumination given off by a star-forming region.

4. Saturn's Swirls

Forces in Saturn's upper atmosphere conspire to create swirls in the ringed planet's cloud cover in an image taken by the Cassini spacecraft. Researchers study the movement of Saturn's clouds in part to learn more about the way fluids work. (Read about the huge "snowballs" that punched through portions of Saturn's rings.)

6. A Patchwork of Colours

Canada's Ellesmere Island presents a patchwork of blue, white, and brown in an image taken by NASA's Terra satellite and released November 24. This north-central part of the island is covered in glaciers (blue and white).

Ellesmere has been continuously inhabited since 2000 B.C., although its current population numbers just under 200 people.

7. Double Crescents
