Is Your Favourite Website Spying on You?
By
Study Web, 17 February 2015.

You know the rules to protecting your privacy online. You hold onto your passwords and login information, account numbers, social security number, and other identifying information.

It’s common sense to keep that kind of potentially compromising data safe. But what about your likes and dislikes? Your regular schedule, and frequently visited locations? Your age or profession?

It may seem harmless to mention that kind of information on an online forum, or reveal in a web search. Who keeps track of such minutiae anyway?

But in the Information Age, that kind of data can be a gold mine. Information is the new currency, and there are companies making their fortunes from compiling, analyzing, and selling your personal data.

It’s a booming industry: a glut of companies are lurking in the shadows of the Internet, gathering your data to sell it to anyone who’s willing to pay the price. These so-called “data brokers” can easily follow your digital trail by using your browser cookies and other ingenious tracking methods.

And it’s not just general statistics, demographics, or overall trends that they’re selling. Many data brokers sell dossiers on individuals, complete profiles that include your name and personal information, without your knowledge or consent. These dossiers can include sensitive information such as medical history, political and religious affiliations, and sexual orientation.

There are no regulations for companies such as these. If you want to keep your personal data private and not let anonymous companies bid over it, you have to take matters into your own hands to block their efforts.

Unfortunately, some of the techniques they use are quite sophisticated and difficult or impossible to block if you want to still use many of the most popular sites and services on the Internet.

But there are ways to limit a lot of the tracking these companies do. Follow the steps below for more information on how to protect your private data from being sold to the highest bidder.

10 FACTS ABOUT MOONS THAT JUST MIGHT BLOW YOUR MIND

10 Facts About Moons That Just Might Blow Your Mind
By B. J. Deming,
Listverse, 25 February 2015.

Why should our solar system’s planets get all the attention? There are things about our own Moon that we either still don’t know or have just learned about, half a century after 12 human beings walked on it.

Other moons may harbour life or contain evidence about incredibly violent events that have changed the very nature of the solar system. A few moons are just plain spectacular, like Charon. What’s Charon, you ask?

10. Pluto’s Moon Charon Never Sets Or Rises

wps6DA2.tmp

Pluto and its biggest moon, Charon, are locked together in a gravity dance where they always face each other. So what? Well, it means that an astronaut on Pluto is either not going to see Charon at all or will see it overhead constantly.

Our Moon is locked to Earth by gravity, too, and that’s why we never see its far side. The difference is that Earth is much bigger than the Moon, so only the Moon is locked. Pluto and Charon are almost the same size, so each is locked to the other. One weird effect of this is that if you’re on the far side of Pluto, you never see Charon. On the near side, it looks about seven times as big as our Moon does and just hangs there in the sky, cycling through its phases in a little over six days.

Speaking of our Moon...

9. Our Moon Is Only Mostly Dead

Part of the thrill of the Apollo missions was that people were setting foot on an untouched lunar surface that had been cold and dead for three or four billion years. Apollo 15 and 17 did find unusually high heat readings, but that could have been instrument error. Nobody suspected active volcanoes. But it turns out that the dinosaurs, some 70 million years ago - as well as later Earth life like elephants and horses that first appeared 33 million years ago - probably watched glowing lava flows on the Moon. Someday, we might see one, too.

Apollo 15 astronauts photographed irregular rocky patches on the basalt mare plains. Nobody had a clue what they were until better images were available, beginning in 2009. Since then, scientists have realized that these irregular mare patches (IMPs) are surprisingly young volcanoes. So far, 70 IMPs have been found. This discovery means that the Moon’s interior stayed hot much longer than scientists first believed. It might even still be partly molten.

8. The Moon Mirrors Life On Earth

There is another light we see on the Moon: that faint glow on the unlit part of a crescent moon. It’s called “earthshine,” because it comes from the light of a full Earth in the Moon’s sky, shining on the moonscape. Scientists have run this earthshine through a spectrometer and found “biosignatures” from our atmosphere and plants. Biosignatures are unique spikes on the spectrum of earthshine that are caused by sunlight reflecting off Earth’s vegetation, oceans, and cloud cover. Yes, NASA spacecraft have confirmed there is life on Earth, and it wasn’t a waste of taxpayer money.

Now that they know what to look for, astronomers can try to find biosignatures in the spectrum of planetshine from distant solar systems. They’re not ready to contact ET just yet, but the discovery that earthshine is a spectral mirror of life is a major step in that direction.

7. Venus Can Shed Light On Our Moon’s Origin

wpsDF29.tmp

Many experts say the Moon formed when an object about the size of Mars whacked it out of the Earth during the solar system’s early days. That’s a good explanation for why the Moon’s chemistry is so much like Earth’s, but it doesn’t satisfy some scientists. At a recent meeting about the origin of the Moon, they kept asking, “What’s Venus made out of?” It’s a good question. Venus and Earth formed close to each other in the big dust cloud that birthed our solar system. They are also about the same size, so why does Earth have a Moon and Venus doesn’t?

No one knows. All of our information about Venus is from either pictures or data collected by orbiting spacecraft. Surface samples, which we don’t have, are the only way to tell if our sister planet is chemically different from Earth and the Moon (in which case, the impact theory about the Moon is probably right). If, instead, Venus also has geochemistry like Earth’s, where did the Moon come from...Venus or Earth?

6. Irregular Moons Show That Giant Planets May Have Changed Orbits

Astronomers call a moon like ours “regular,” because its orbit is generally circular and doesn’t have a steep angle. There are also some “irregular” moons around the giant planets - Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune - with orbits that have weird paths and angles.

Scientists say these irregulars are all about the same size. Each of the giant planets has roughly the same number of them. Computer modelling shows that these irregulars could have been comets that were captured some four billion years ago, if the giant planets had switched orbits back then. According to this theory, the giant planet shuffle also threw lots of comets and other debris at the inner solar system in an event called the Late Heavy Bombardment.

With all that going on, some moons probably ended up with their own little moonlets, right? Well, not for long...

5. Moons Can Have Moons (Technically)

At least one asteroid has a moon. It shouldn’t. The Sun is so much bigger, so it should easily steal the asteroid’s moon. However, that asteroid is far enough away from the Sun for something called a “Hill sphere” to take effect. A Hill sphere is where gravity from an object (let’s call it Earth) is stronger than gravity from a bigger but more distant object (the Sun). Our Moon orbits Earth instead of the Sun because of Earth’s Hill sphere.

Theoretically, any moon that’s far enough away from its planet can have Hill-space moonlets, but none have ever been found. Maybe we just haven’t seen any yet. However, other forces are at work, like tiny variations in gravity called “tidal forces” that make moonlets either crash or break apart. So maybe there simply aren’t any moonlets left anymore.

4. Saturn Has Trojan Moons

wps49AC.tmp

Saturn is the only planet in our solar system to have moons hiding in another moon’s orbit. Tethys and Dione aren’t alone as they zip around Saturn. About 60 degrees ahead and behind each one is another, much smaller moon, orbiting Saturn in the same path. That’s right - two orbital paths, with three moons in each path.

This effect has nothing to do with Hill spaces. There are stable Lagrangian points 60 degrees ahead of and behind Tethys and Dione. These points are where gravitational pull inward exactly matches the outward centripetal force on the little Trojan moon that’s going way too fast for its weight class. So what happened to other moons that weren’t in a stable Lagrangian point? They probably escaped or collided with each other, adding material to Saturn’s rings.

3. Ganymede Has A ‘Club Sandwich’ Ocean Structure That Could Harbour Life

In the 1990s, NASA’s Galileo spacecraft visited Jupiter and found evidence that an extremely salty ocean, hundreds of kilometres deep, probably sits under the icy surface of Ganymede and a few other Jovian moons. At first, scientists thought that intense cold and high pressure at the bottom of Ganymede’s ocean froze the water there, making it an unlikely place to find life.

According to a new theory, Ganymede’s ocean is actually a “club sandwich” of up to three ice layers, each alternating with water. The bottom layer is very salty water. Extremophiles are more likely to live in water than in ice, and since there could be hydrothermal vents down there, similar to those found on Earth, this new model improves the chances that Ganymede might harbour life.

In 2022, the European Space Agency plans to launch a spacecraft that will study Ganymede and perhaps even land on it.

2. Titan Manufactures The Raw Materials For Plastic

As it turns out, George Carlin was wrong: Nature doesn’t need humans to make plastic. Saturn’s biggest moon is already working on it.

Titan is the only moon in the solar system with a significant atmosphere. It’s smoggy there, and the weather is terrible. It rains methane and other hydrocarbons. If scientists are right that this moon’s atmosphere is like the one Earth used to have, things have really improved here at home. When sunlight hits hydrocarbons in Titan’s atmosphere, they crack apart and form other molecules. The process is similar to the chemical cracking we must do to hydrocarbons here on Earth to get raw ingredients for plastic. In fact, it’s so similar that NASA’s Cassini spacecraft found propylene and ethane on Titan. These are exactly what plastics manufacturers use to make polypropylene and polyethylene.

1. There May Be Life On Europa

Europa is another one of those icy Jovian moons that probably has a subsurface ocean. It doesn’t look like Ganymede, though. It has orange-brown material covering much of its surface, as well as white ice. NASA labels Europa’s orange-brown stuff “non-ice components,” because no one knows for sure what it is. However, a NASA astrogeologist has used infrared light to compare the orange-brown material with extreme bacteria here on Earth. He says he wasn’t looking for anything in particular and was very surprised to find a close, though not perfect, match.

No, life hasn’t been definitely discovered on Europa. The only way to tell for sure is with samples. Europa is very far away and very dangerous to visit because of radiation from nearby Jupiter. Nonetheless, NASA is considering a Europa Clipper mission, even if it means shutting down a lunar orbiter as well as Opportunity - one of the two Mars rovers.

Because finding extraterrestrial life is that important.

5 Animal By-Products That Are Also Expensive Delicacies
By Kate Horowitz,
Mental Floss, 25 February 2015.

When it comes to animal by-products, one man’s trash truly is another man’s treasure.

1. Snail Caviar

wps53B1.tmp

Price Tag: US$139.00 per 75-gram jar
Pair With:
Beets, black pudding, and beef.

Free-range “happy snails” at the Aylesbury Escargots outdoor Snail Park go where they like, enjoying daily sprinkler showers and a diet of fresh leaves and biscuits. Come mating time, the hermaphroditic snails pair up, swap sperm, and lay about 100 tiny, pearly eggs each. Snail farmer Sophie Wharton then collects, sorts, and cleans the eggs by hand. The Escargot Pearls, as the Whartons call them, have a “slightly earthy, ferny taste.”

2. Elephant Poop Coffee

Price Tag: US$50.00 per cup
Pair With:
Chocolate, carrot cake, and raisins.

Some people look at a pile of elephant dung and see a pile of elephant dung. The folks at the Black Ivory Coffee Company see a fortune. Building on the well-established and super-gross model of civet poop coffee, Black Ivory coffee is “naturally refined” in the digestive tracts of rescued elephants in Thailand. According to Black Ivory developer Blake Dinkin, the elephants’ digestive processes break down the proteins that make coffee so bitter, and the fermentation in their stomachs imparts “flavours you wouldn’t get in other coffee.” No kidding.

3. Fish Sperm

wps4298.tmp
Credit: Kirk K, Flickr // CC BY-NC-ND 2.0
The culinary term for fish sperm sacs is “milt.” In Japan, this delicacy is known as shirako, or “white children” - a pretty poetic euphemism for something kinda gross. Shirako is eaten for its creamy, custard-like consistency, its light, delicate taste, and its supposed powers as an aphrodisiac.

Most shirako comes from cod, anglerfish, or salmon, and is pretty inexpensive. Then there’s fugu no shirako, the milt from the ridiculously deadly pufferfish. Chefs have to undergo a rigorous training and certification program to even prepare fugu, and even then, accidents happen. Safely serving fugu shirako is a tricky job, which means that even finding a chef who will serve you “white children” is incredibly rare and very expensive.

4. Donkey Cheese

Price Tag: US$1000.00 per pound
Best Served: Alone, in
thin slices.

High in the mountains of Serbia, deep in the Zasavica nature reserve, 100 endangered Balkan donkeys and a few humans are hard at work making the most expensive cheese in the world. The jennies (female donkeys) are milked by hand three times a day, because, astonishingly, there is no such thing as a donkey-milking machine. It’s hardly an efficient process: From three gallons of hard-won donkey milk, the cheese makers will get about a pound of pule, or smoked donkey cheese.

Pule’s appeal is due in part to its rarity, in part to its reputation as a superfood, and in part to national pride. In 2012, claims surfaced that tennis superstar Novak Djokovic had purchased the entire world supply of pule for his chain of restaurants. The story was later debunked, but Djokovic was inspired. “As I understand it,” he told the press, “it is incredible quality. I have not tried it yet, but I am looking forward to it."

5. Sea Urchin Gonads

wpsBDC4.tmp
Credit: Heather Joan, Flickr // CC BY-NC-SA 2.0

Price Tag Market price
Best Served:
Raw atop crackers and cheese, in sushi, or mixed into pasta sauce.

They’re eaten all around the world. At the sushi bar, they’re called uni, which is usually translated as “sea urchin roe.” This is not quite accurate. Uni’s vibrant saffron colour and rich, creamy texture belong not to the urchin’s eggs, but to its gonads. And what magical ‘nads they are.

Some diners are repulsed by the urchin’s smooshiness. For many others, a mouthful of sea urchin junk is a ticket to bliss-town. Texture and flavour can only claim part of the credit: Urchin gonads also naturally contain the euphoria-producing cannabinoid anandamide.

10 Amazing Animals Touched By Midas
By Bryan Nelson,
Mother Nature Network, 24 February 2015.

Midas was the king in Greek mythology who turned anything he touched into gold. It's possible he got his hands on these brilliantly adorned creatures. Here are 10 animals seemingly painted in gold.

1. Golden lion tamarin

wpsF5D0.tmp
Photo: su neko/Wikimedia Commons

It's obvious how these charismatic monkeys, distinguished by their mane-like gold coats, got their names. They're native to the Atlantic coastal forests of Brazil, but only an estimated 1,000 individuals remain in the wild because of deforestation and habitat loss. Suffice it to say, these monkeys are far more rare and special than their namesake colour.

2. Golden tortoise beetle

wps7BF.tmp
Photo: Ilona Loser/Wikimedia Commons

They look like they might be jewellery, but you'd be up for a creepy-crawly surprise if you found yourself wearing one of these. Golden tortoise beetles, sometimes called goldbugs, have shiny, metallic-coloured shells most of the time but are capable of rapidly changing to a dull brown when disturbed or frightened. Incredibly, they do this by changing the flow of fluid between the layers of their cuticles.

3. Golden apple snail

wpsEBA8.tmp
Photo: tallphotographist/DeviantArt

This cute little guy is an amphibious variety of apple snail. Not surprisingly, golden apple snails are popular as aquarium pets in large part because of their flashy appearance. Aside from their rich looks, though, they're also fascinating in that they have both a gill and a lung, making them adapted to both land and water habitats.

4. Golden slender mongoose

wps24F5.tmp
Photo: Karelj/Wikimedia Commons

Slender mongooses showcase a variety of coat colours, but perhaps the most striking variety is golden. These cute carnivores can be found throughout sub-Saharan Africa sneaking among the yellow savannah grasses. As befits their popular image, they are also as capable as other mongooses at hunting and killing venomous snakes - beautiful and deadly!

5. Golden eyelash viper

wps9E1E.tmp
Photo: Geoff Gallice/Wikimedia Commons

Don't get too tempted by the golden batting eyelashes of these shiny serpents; they bite, and they are venomous. Nevertheless, their sharp gold complexion makes them popular as pets. Eyelash vipers aren't always gold-coloured, but are often bred that way because of the striking appearance.

6. Yellow tang

wps8F90.tmp
Photo: Luc Viatour/Wikimedia Commons

A wide variety of gold and yellow fish exists, especially among tropical species, but perhaps the most striking to represent them is the yellow tang, which is one of the most popular aquarium fish. Members of the surgeonfish family, their colour makes them difficult to miss. In the wild you'll find them swimming in shallow reefs in the Pacific and Indian oceans.

7. Gee's golden langur

wpsEF2.tmp
Photo: Yathin S Krishnappa/Wikimedia Commons

These super-stylish monkeys, with hair colour that varies from gold to cream to rust, hail from India and Bhutan. Unfortunately, they're extremely endangered, with a population of barely more than 1,000 remaining in the wild in India. Conservation efforts are underway, but their habitat continues to be degraded by human activity.

8. American goldfinch

wps7696.tmp
Photo: Rodney Campbell/Flickr

Gold is actually a relatively frequent colour in bird feathers; the American goldfinch makes for a familiar representative. Males alone showcase the rich plumage. Females play it modest with a dull, yellow-brown shade. Unlike so many other species, the goldfinch has actually benefited from human activity. They are often found as common visitors to bird feeders in residential areas.

9. Golden poison dart frog

wpsCEA6.tmp
Photo: Wilfried Berns/Wikimedia Commons

Endemic to the Pacific coast of Colombia, these precious little amphibians are actually seriously deadly. They get their name from the alkaloid toxin that coats their skin, which some native people have used for poisoning hunting darts. The frogs' poison is so lethal that it may even be the most poisonous of any living animal.

10. Golden bat

wpsF28E.tmp

Named after King Midas himself, Myotis midastactus is a newly recognized bat species hailing from the Bolivian savannah. Imagine the beauty of witnessing one of these tiny flying mammals hovering over golden Bolivian grasses during sunset!

10 STRANGE MYSTERIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD THAT ARE STILL UNSOLVED

10 Strange Mysteries From Around The World That Are Still Unsolved
By Estelle Thurtle,
Listverse, 25 February 2015.

All things that cannot be explained remain an intriguing conversation topic for many people around the globe. Some mysteries, however, are more interesting than the rest simply because of how weird they are.

10. China’s Dwarf Village

wpsC81E.tmp

Villages in general are not strange. Villages in China are also not strange. There are many remote ones in this country, but one stands out from the others. Scientists and experts are extremely interested in the inhabitants of Yangsi, situated in the Sichuan Province. The reason? Not only are there only 80 residents in the village, but almost half of them are dwarfs.

Rumour has it, according to those who live in Yangsi, that a mysterious disease befell the little village more than 60 years ago. Young children between the ages of five and seven were most affected, and the disease caused them to simply stop growing. Experts now know that stunted growth is only likely to appear in 1 in 20,000 people, so what happened in Yangsi is something very much out of the ordinary. Especially considering that historic sightings of the dwarfs claim that several hundred of them were residing in the Sichuan region at one point.

As if the mystery affliction wasn’t bad enough, some of the children struck by it started suffering from a variety of disabilities. As adults, some of the afflicted gave birth to children who also only grew to around 1 meter (3 ft) in height.

The Chinese government has never allowed visitors to the village, inevitably opening up the story to a host of urban legends. It has been said that the citizens felt dark forces had invaded their homes and started believing that they were cursed due to their ancestors’ anger over improper burials. Others apparently believe a turtle to be the source of the problem. Some of the villages cooked and ate a black turtle and, soon after, the strange disease hit Yangsi.

After all this time, however, it seems that the residents are growing out of the disease. The younger generation has seemingly been spared.

9. Dorothy Eady And Omm Sety

wps76AE.tmp

Dorothy Eady was a toddler just like any other. She ran, played, and laughed all day, and was a treasure to her doting parents. Then, the unthinkable happened. One morning, Dorothy was running down the stairs at her home near London when she slipped and fell. So severe was the fall that the three-year-old was pronounced dead on the scene.

But then something very unexpected happened: Dorothy woke up. For another four years, her parents had their beautiful daughter back. In 1908, however, everything changed.

On a regular outing to the British Museum, Dorothy’s parents first became aware that the girl was behaving strangely. As soon as they reached the Egyptian section of the museum, Dorothy was transfixed. She couldn’t get enough of the artefacts and sat with a glass-enclosed mummy for a long time, refusing to go home with her parents. Her parents even caught a glimpse of her running around the statues and kissing their feet.

After this incident, things took a turn for the worse. Dorothy became almost depressed and would stare at photos of ancient Egypt insisting that the country was her home and she needed to return to it. A picture of the “Temple of Seti the First at Abydos” got her especially excited one day. She rushed to her father and shouted that this place was her former home.

Before she found the picture of the temple, Dorothy had dreams in which she saw the buildings and greenery of ancient Egypt. Her interest and love for Egypt skyrocketed, and she joined study groups to learn more about reincarnation and spirituality.

She finally moved to Cairo after marrying an Egyptian man and gave birth to a baby that she named Seti. She herself would now be known as Omm Sety. Omm’s marriage didn’t last. Her habit of going into a trance and scribbling random hieroglyphics at night about her spirit guide completely freaked her husband out.

Her writings eventually amounted to around 70 pages and detailed Omm’s life in ancient Egypt. It stated that she was a priestess at the Kom El Sultan temple and had a child by Pharoah Seti at the young age of 14. However, she had broken a priestess vow by losing her virginity and took her own life to prevent the Pharaoh from being punished for this crime.

The hieroglyphics also contained accounts of spiritual encounters with Seti and plans to reunite with him in the Egyptian underworld.

This fantastical story has been discarded by many as the ramblings of a crazy person, up until the day that Omm Sety helped archaeologists find the exact location of the Temple Garden. She also led them to an undiscovered tunnel at the north side of the Temple. Omm Sety died in 1981, after having lived the rest of her days at the Temple of Abydos. No rational explanation for her memories, dreams, and knowledge of Egypt has been offered, and many sceptics find themselves wondering if Dorothy Eady was in fact the reincarnation of the ancient Egypt priestess, Omm Sety.

8. Francis Leavy’s Handprint

wps2A7E.tmp

Francis Leavy was a dedicated fire-fighter during the 1920s. He loved his job, and his peers loved him. He was a pleasant man, always ready with a smile and a helping hand. On April 18, 1924, Francis’s colleagues became aware of a change in his demeanour. Suddenly, he was an unsmiling, grunting guy washing a large window at the Chicago Fire Department, not looking at anyone or talking.

After a few minutes, Leavy suddenly announced that he had a strange feeling - a feeling that he might die that very day. At that very moment, the phone rang and broke the heavy atmosphere brought on by the fireman’s words. A fire was raging at a building quite a long way from the fire department, and no time was to be wasted.

In just a few minutes, Francis Leavy and his fellow fire-fighters were on the scene, assessing the situation and helping those trapped on the top floors. Everything seemed to be on track to rescue everyone from the building. Then, suddenly, the flames engulfed the lower part of the building, and the roof caved in. As soon as this happened, the walls came crashing down, pinning many people under the rubble - including Leavy. Leavy’s grim premonition came true. He lost his life that day trying to save others.

The very next day, trying to come to terms with the loss of Leavy, his colleagues sat at the firehouse thinking about the events of the previous day. Suddenly, they noticed something strange on one of the windows. It looked like a handprint smudged onto the glass. Eerily, it was the very same window that Francis Leavy was busy washing the day before.

The firemen cleaned the window again, but the print stubbornly refused to disappear. For many years, the handprint remained on the window in spite of chemicals used to try and remove it. The strange mystery remained unsolved, but came to an abrupt end when a newspaper boy threw a paper against the window in 1944, causing it to shatter into pieces.

7. Jeannette DePalma

wps5D44.tmp

In 1972, a dog brought something very strange to the back door of his owner’s home. He had sniffed out an almost completely decomposed human forearm on a cliff top in Springfield, New Jersey and dragged it back to its master who realized with a great shock what it was. The man informed the police and, after a short search, they found the remains of the body to which the arm belonged. The remains were that of Jeannette DePalma, a teenager who had been missing for six weeks.

Not only did they find her decomposed body, but there were strange objects on the ground where it lay. Rumours began to fly that the girl had been sacrificed by a local coven of witches. Others believed that Satanists murdered her for occult ritual purposes.

The strangest thing about the murder, however, was the fact that no one wanted to speak about it when an article about the incident was in its planning stages. Even after 30 years, people who lived in the area refused to comment or give their opinions on what they believe happened. Not one person who was interviewed wanted their real name used, and this even included the local police department.

Leads in the case did not come in the traditional manner. People sent in anonymous letters omitting their addresses and names. One of the letters stated that logs had been placed around Jeannette’s body and that the writer of it couldn’t reveal his name for many reasons which he couldn’t reveal either.

Another anonymous writer wrote that he or she knew about a coven of witches in the area who were planning to murder a kid over Halloween. The writer was a child at the time and remembered being terrified of going out trick-or-treating for the holiday. Yet another letter stated that the writer’s mom knew DePalma and that they were about the same age in 1972. This letter also mentioned animals being murdered and strung up in the trees after the murder took place.

In all of the letters, witches or Satanism was mentioned. One of them reiterated that DePalma was a very religious girl who wouldn’t get mixed up with satanic practices. However, the writer also mentions that Jeannette DePalma started becoming a little “wild” as she got older.

The murder of Jeannette DePalma was big news for around two weeks after her body was found, and then the absolute silence around it started and remained. Her murderer has never been found.

6. Kalachi Village

wpsD9D7.tmp

Something strange is happening to residents of the Kalachi village in Kazakhstan. They just can’t seem to keep their eyes open. Every day, several villagers just fall asleep in broad daylight and remain asleep for at least a couple of hours. Some of them have reported only waking up after a couple of days. There is no apparent reason for these “sleep incidents,” and more than 100 residents have inexplicably fallen asleep when they weren’t tired over the course of a few years.

In September 2014, several children who were attending school on the first day of the new academic year also fell asleep for no reason. Medical experts were unable to come up with a verified explanation, much less a “cure” or form of prevention. Naturally, some of those who suffer from this “condition” are terrified that they might die in their sleep.

Some of the “sleepers” have reported strange feelings of memory loss, vertigo, and extreme nausea after waking from their sleep. Other symptoms even include hallucinations. In addition to all this, doctors have found that some of the people suffering from this ailment have suffered other health scares such as brain dysfunction and even strokes.

The sleeping villagers are not good for the economy; not only are there hours of work lost, but fear is causing many people to leave the area. Radiation levels have been tested in the area but nothing abnormal has been found. On-going investigations have yet to turn up any clues as to why this strange affliction has befallen the little village. In 2015, scientists found high concentrations of carbon monoxide in the town. While the findings aren’t conclusive, they may provide one more clue in this mystery.

5. Jo Girardelli

In the early 1800s, Jo Girardelli was the hot new fire act on the block. Taking on a whole new angle on fire acts, Girardelli was able to swallow red-hot objects without it causing her any pain or harm. Those who saw her perform were amazed at what was happening before their eyes.

Girardelli was able to “rinse” her mouth with nitric acid without it burning holes in her gums and cheeks. To prove that she really had the acid in her mouth and not some harmless fluid, she would spit it onto iron where it would immediately start eating through the metal. Girardelli also played around with boiling oil, filling her mouth with it and then spitting it out, causing a minor fire when it landed on wood.

Jo Girardelli didn’t stop there. All of her acts had to be bigger and better, so she started using hot wax and molten lead. She heated metal objects, such as shovels, over open fires and then pressed them against her skin. She even pressed her tongue against some of them. In all of these acts, her flesh remained just as it was before - completely unburned.

She remained a hot topic all over England, and no one was ever able to figure out just how she did what she did. Not even the sceptics were able to prove any trickery on her part. There is no record of Jo’s life after she moved from England, and her amazing acts remain as mysterious as ever.

4. Le Loyon

Something creepy is taking place in the woods in western Switzerland. A man dressed in a military uniform with a gas mask over his face seems to be “haunting” the place.

For more than 10 years now, locals who live near these woods have reported seeing the man walk the same path every day. They have given him the name Le Loyon, and they are terrified of him. He doesn’t speak and, when he encounters someone, he simply stares at them, and then walks away in silence. A photographer who tried to take a picture of the mysterious man reported him to be almost 2 meters (6’6″) in height.

Children are too scared to play in these woods anymore, even though the man doesn’t seem to be threatening in any way. At one point, people saw him carrying what looked like flowers while slowly walking down a pathway in the woods. According to the authorities in charge of the area, there is nothing that can be done to get the man to leave the woods since he is not trespassing and has done nothing wrong.

At one point, his clothes were found abandoned in the woods with a note saying he was leaving because “The risk of a hunt for the Beast” was too great.

It is unknown where the man lives, why he wears a gas mask, and why he doesn’t speak. Several theories speculate that he might be mentally disturbed or have a skin disease which would cause him to not want to be seen by others. But, until someone gets him to take off the mask, or at least speak out, the mystery man will remain a mystery.

3. Hoia Baciu

Believed by many to be the most haunted forest in the world, Hoia Baciu in Transylvania is the setting for many unexplained, spooky tales. It also doesn’t help that the trees are bent and twisted in seemingly unnatural ways, giving the woods a horror movie feel.

Several visitors to the Hoia Baciu have returned from their trip terrified, claiming that burns and rashes have appeared on their bodies for no apparent reason. Some even claim to have skipped a few hours during their exploration among the creepy trees. They have no explanation for why they cannot remember what happened during the ”missing” hours.

Many people are truly convinced that ghostly apparitions hang around in the forest, and the locals absolutely refuse to set foot in it. Especially since rumours of floating heads and voices emanating from the darkness started making the rounds.

It all seems to have started back in 1968 when Alexandru Sift took a photograph inside the forest of what many continue to believe was a UFO. Another persistent story tells of a shepherd venturing into the woods with 200 sheep, never to be seen or heard from again.

On-going ghost hunts have turned up no clue as to what might be behind all the weird events taking place here, but paranormal experts are not giving up the ghost just yet when it comes to studying Hoia Baciu and revealing its creepy secrets to the world.

2. Cosmic Radio Bursts

Since their discovery in 2007, cosmic radio bursts or “blitzars” have been a source of fascination to scientists around the world. The nine blitzars that have been studied in the years since their discovery have all been plucked from historical data.

Then, in January 2015, scientists announced that they identified a blitzar in real time. This means that whatever event caused the radio burst to happen was happening at the time that the scientists caught it.

It is unknown what causes these radio bursts, and experts have guessed that it might occur due to collapsing neutron stars or flares. The bursts have a length of one millisecond and, during this miniscule amount of time, they create the same amount of energy that the Sun would create over the course of one million years.

Emily Petroff, a researcher in Australia, stated that these blitzars occur at a distance of more than five billion light-years away from Earth, and the real time blitzar was noticed near the Aquarius constellation. She went on to say that she and her team will continue looking out for blitzars so as to try and gather some information and, hopefully, one day get behind the mystery of their origin.

1. Bukit Timah

During World War II, Japanese soldiers stationed in Singapore glimpsed a strange version of Bigfoot there. Many reported seeing a primate-like creature covered in grey hair and standing up to 2 meters (6’6″) tall in the Bukit Timah rain forest.

Sightings peaked during the war, but there are also a few present-day sightings reported every now and then. The Bukit Timah area is now a biodiverse nature reserve that housed several creatures, including tigers, not too long ago.

Although it is still a mystery as to what the soldiers and others were actually seeing in this area, some people believe they might have confused macaques for primates. However, according to most experts, this would be unlikely as the macaques in Singapore resemble the ones in Japan and the soldiers at least would know what they were looking at. The last sightings took place in 2007 when visitors told stories of seeing an ape-creature being run over by a taxi and another scratching around in trash cans.
