10 Completely Useless Websites We Found in 2012
By Christine Erickson,
Mashable, 23 November 2012.

Most of us spent an unfathomable amount of time on the Internet in 2012. At Mashable, most of that time was spent productively (look at all of these cool things we wrote). But we reserved a portion of that time to laugh our butts off at some seriously silly websites.

When you’re not Tumbling, pinning, tweeting, tagging or deciding what filter to add over your brunch photography, sometimes all it takes is a very simple website to make you laugh.

Some of these websites required more work than others - a few happened to grab the perfect domain. Check out our 10 favourite purposeless websites of 2012.

Sometimes, it's not the invention that wins but the innovation. An Australian developer remixed an old Swedish pop song with a GIF made by popular animator Paul Robertson.

Combine the two and you have a rainbow-coloured, looping pack of dogs running to save the Internet from a bad day.

Of all the infinite loops you could watch, drunk Ron Swanson in a pillbox hat should be near the top.

You'll soon discover that a minute's worth of Flo Rida's "Who Dat Girl" has passed before you realize, "Wait, how did I get here?" That's probably what creators Greg Cooper and Simon Fletcher had in mind.

Warning: this website is highly addictive.

There's absolutely no reason why flinging stiff cats around a blank webpage should be this fun - but it is.

Artist Tara Sinn created the site in 2011, but it became a quick hit in 2012.

Sometimes you need a little web pick-me-up. This GIF-filled Bill Cosby tribute has already overjoyed nearly 1 million viewers.

In 2008, a third-year game development student named Colin created a bear animation that turned into a meme referencing poorly designed 3D animation.

People invented variations of the animation, including this giraffe, in response. Three years later in June, this domain was picked up, and the meme lives on.

In case you forgot, there's a website that will answer the burning question: Is it Christmas?

We're hoping the page will look a little more festive on Dec. 25.

Did you ever have the desire to drag ducks along a flashing rainbow background, scored to the Duck Tails theme song?

Yes, there's a website for that.

This Nickelback-inspired website allowed you to share photos with your friends in the most literal way possible.

The website - created by Murilo Zeneddine and Renato Michalischen - launched in October. It had more than 300,000 unique visitors within two weeks. Unfortunately, Nickelback wasn't as amused - the site is now offline, but the creators are in contact with the band's lawyers to try to reactivate it.

If you've ever wanted to feel like a part of Naughty by Nature but never had enough people to swing their hands in the air, just keep playing this site over and over again.

(Try to ignore any lag in load time.)

Strapped for a wittyTwitter bio? This site generates really weird options, like "Community Celebratoire," "Vampire Slayer" or "Mitt Romney's Family Dog."

The generator launched after the flurry of Twitter redesign news in June.

  2. Really nice post. Thanks for sharing that with us. I am sure these websites will still remain the foundation of our websites today.
