Tired of snow? Dreaming of sunny skies? It's time to get out of Dodge. Whether you travel for business or pleasure, this gear will ensure that your travel experience is as smooth as possible.

1. Cable TSA Lock

New Picture 199

Price: US$13.50

If you check a bag when you're traveling, you probably want a little extra piece of mind for your luggage and its contents. Eagle Creek's Cable TSA Lock is a Travel Sentry certified lock, which means that screeners can open it without destroying it, but others can't. And if you arrive at your hotel and can't find the keys? Not a problem. The lock also features a 3-dial combination you can set to a code of your choice.

2. Train Reaction

New Picture 200

Price: US$15

Golfers know a thing or two about lugging heavy bags around. Why do you think they invented the caddy? However, traveling professionally is no less tedious, especially when you're loaded down with multiple bags, and equipment. That's why golf supply company Club Glove created the Train Reaction, a simple plastic ladder hook that slides over the handles of any rolling luggage, linking both bags together. Now you've got a free hand to tip your caddy, I mean cabbie.

3. GoToob

New Picture 201

Price: 3-pack 1.25 fl. Oz. US$18; 2 fl. Oz. US$22; 3 fl. Oz. US$26

Designed by San Francisco-based humangear, GoToobs alleviate the need to have to purchase those overpriced micro-sized versions of all your regular toiletries or deal with those flimsy, hard-to-fill plastic travel containers. The BPA-free silicone travel tubes are TSA-approved and have a wide opening that makes filling and clean-up a snap. Once a GoToob is full, a no-drip valve ensures you get the desired amount with every squeeze.

4. Chargecard

Price: iPhone 5/5S US$25; Micro USB US$25

Traveling without our gadgets would be unthinkable, but if their batteries were to die, you may as well have left them at home. Nomad's Chargecard has a compact Lightning cable and micro USB in a package that's the size and shape of a credit card. Untangling charging cables when you're in transit is almost impossible - especially if you've packed multiple devices. While Chargecard may not replace your regular charger, it's a comfort to know a quick charge is as close as your wallet.

5. Travel Adapter and Wireless Router

New Picture 203

Price: US$45

One dark day you may find yourself in a hotel that doesn't have Wi-Fi in every room, but there's no need to panic. Satechi's Smart Travel Adapter and Wireless Router can be used to recharge your digital devices anywhere around the world, and even better, it can also be connected via an Ethernet cable for use as a portable router or access point to wirelessly connect to the hotel's internet.

6. Ultrasonic Travel Humidifier

New Picture 204

Price: US$50

Dry, recirculated air on board planes and coming from indoor heating systems can wreak havoc on our respiratory system. Adding moisture directly into the environment aids your body's natural ability to keep airways healthy, but isn't always easy. The Air-O-Swiss Ultrasonic Travel Humidifier can fit around the neck of just about any plastic water bottle. Ultrasonic vibration ensures that water vapour stays dispersed in the air and won't collect in a puddle on your nightstand.

7. Trakdot

New Picture 9

Price: US$90 w/activation and 1 year of service

GlobaTrak's Trakdot is a GSM-based tracking device that uses the cellular network, rather than GPS, to keep tabs on your bags. Trakdot pairs up with your cell phone; once that's done, just pack it in your suitcase before checking your bag. Trakdot runs on 2 AA batteries (included) and is FAA compliant. It uses an on-board accelerometer to put itself to sleep while in transit, then wakes up upon arrival and sends a text or email to your cell phone letting you know it's arrived.

8. Walkin' Bag

New Picture 205

Price: 22" US$115

Swany's Walkin' Bag is the perfect choice for travellers who need a carry-on compliant solution. Measuring 22" x 14" x 9", it can easily be stored in any overhead compartment. Walkin' Bag creator and Swany CEO, Etsuo Miyoshi, is also a polio survivor who needed a bag that could also help him get around whenever he travelled. The curved telescoping handle locks and can support up to 250 lbs, while the rolling bag's honeycomb frame can hold up to 180 lbs, and ensures you'll always have a place to sit if you have a long wait.

9. Noise-cancelling Headphones

New Picture 206

Price: US$200

The biggest complaint from anyone who travels a lot - right after the legroom, and the waiting, and the lousy overpriced food - has got to be the noise. Noise-cancelling headphones come in all shapes and sizes, but Audio Technica's recently released pair made the top of our list. The ATH-ANC70 QuietPoint Active Noise-cancelling headphones are ideal to travel with, reducing environmental noise by up to 90 percent. These headphones are so light you'll forget you're wearing them, and when you're not, they fold up to fit in a compact case.

10. Triposo App

New Picture 207

Price: Free for iOS and Android

Ever trekked to a dream destination, only to find your best-laid plans ruined by an unexpected downpour? Triposo is a travel app that takes things like weather into account and then makes suitable recommendations as a result. For example, it might suggest you head over to that world-class tapas bar, as opposed to an outdoor concert, if a storm is headed your way. The app also factors in time of day and business hours, ensuring you don't arrive at a restaurant you've been meaning to visit only to find it closed. And don't worry if your connection conks out - you can still access maps and sightseeing information you've downloaded.

  1. Start preparing early by making a detailed list of what you need to bring and buy. Then as you’re running errands in the days before you depart, you’ll know exactly what you need. Make your list thorough and include everything from underwear to sunglasses. A week before you leave, take clothes to the dry cleaners. Wash the rest of the clothes you’re packing at least two days in advance.
