Seeing pink everywhere? Welcome to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a month for celebrating life, acknowledging the fight against this silent killer, remembering those who’ve lost their fight, and supporting the survivors and their families. The statistics can be scary: This is a disease that we know more and more about thanks to genetic testing, and yet some 1 in 8 women are still expected to develop “invasive breast cancer” in their lifetime.
We’ve scoured the app stores to find the apps that will help you learn more about early prevention, support the cause and deal with a diagnosis. Some of these apps were designed with a phone’s portrait-oriented screen in mind, but the information remains a valuable asset.
1. Beyond the Shock (iOS, Free)
If you download only one Breast Cancer awareness app, make it this one. The National Breast Cancer Foundation has put together an informative, insightful and authoritative package that combines educational videos about breast cancer and treatment with a forum to ask questions. The videos are narratives with illustrations, but they convey valuable information in easily digestible chunks. You can also find videos with breast cancer survivors, each detailing one moving tale after another.
2. Bliss HD+ (iOS, US$1.99)
Play for a good cause. Mobile Deluxe gives up to 50 percent of the game's price to its Breast Cancer Awareness partner, The Beautiful Day Foundation. Or you can let your score turn into donations you agree to give. Either way, the game is a fun distraction, a puzzle that has echoes of Dr. Mario and Tetris. And it supports a good cause. It's winning combo all around.
3. Pink Breast Cancer Ribbon LWP (Android, Free)
This app helps dress up your phone and tablet with a cool selection of animated wallpapers, including several variants on pink breast cancer ribbons. But the real go-to wallpapers here are the pink Android character with a breast cancer awareness ribbon, and the pink Android amid her green counterparts. The app is best for Android phones or 7-inch tablets, as the images get fuzzy on larger screens.
4. TweetCaster Pink for Twitter (Android or iOS, US$10)
TweetCaster teamed up with the Feel Your Boobies Foundation to support the cause of breast cancer awareness. The US$10 fee goes to the foundation, and in return, you'll get a pink-enhanced version of TweetCaster Pro for reading and scheduling tweets. This app provides a great way to show your support - and better organize your inbound and outgoing tweets.
5. BreastAware (iOS, Free)
Sometimes, simple and demonstrative does it best. While many apps will show you sketches or illustrations of what to do in a breast self-exam, BreastAware covers what you need to know about breast cancer prevention and shows you how to do a self-exam. The self-exam demo is the most explicit we found, an actual woman (and not a CGI stand-in) performing an exam on herself. But because it's real, this video is extremely useful.
6. Breast Self Exam (iOS, US$0.99)
Where Breast Aware is all about the real-world demonstration, Breast Self Exam is one of the best examples of an illustrated walk-through of a self-exam. The app also lets you keep track of changes, and will store a photo of your own breasts if you want to monitor any changes from month to month. The app's tutorial is clear, and the reminder and self-exam history are unique features.

7. DailyRX (Android, Free)
If you prefer articles delivered with less medical jargon, DailyRX is a handy way to get breast cancer news from medical journals and studies in a more digestible fashion. Unlike other medical news apps, this app has a dedicated section for Breast Cancer. And the app cites the source link at the bottom, so you can easily reference the original source material.
8. Are You Dense (iOS, Free)
The Are You Dense app lacks intuitive design and the professional polish of some. But the information contained is valuable. Many women don't know that the density of their breast tissue can affect the accuracy of a mammogram. Nor do they know that some two-thirds of pre-menopausal women have dense breast tissue. Are You Dense? is from a non-profit of the same name that's dedicated to educating women about this sub-issue in the fight against breast cancer.
9. Choose This Not That: Breast Cancer (Android, US$2.99)
Using data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Institutes of Health, Choose This Not That: Breast Cancer recommends foods and dietary combinations based on the specific illness you have, or want to reduce your risk for getting. The developer has some street cred, since the company is a Community Partner with the USDA and Centre for Nutrition Policy and Promotion.
10. Half-Marathon Trainer (Android, US$1.99)
Train to get healthy - and Zen Labs donates 5 percent of the purchase price to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Zen Labs has other fitness apps to help you get into a regimen for 5K and 10K runs, too.
