Glow in the Dark World: 12 Smart Illuminated Inventions

Glow in the dark tech doesn’t have to be limited to novelties like glow sticks – it could be used to make the roads safer, provide illumination without the need for electricity, and allow surfers to see each other in dark waters. These 12 applications of luminescence include everything from clothing and pillows to cars and architecture.

1. Glow in the Dark VW Golf

Bright green luminescence ensures that nobody has any trouble seeing this VW Golf MK7 at night, which has been covered in a special phosphor-foil 3M wrap. Created by the tuners at Low-Car-Scene and Blackbox-Richter, this glow in the dark car looks white and pink during the day, and green and black at night.

2. Urban Dwelling by Jiri Prihoda

This glow-in-the-dark urban structure is a two-story dwelling with a secret compartment hiding a pull-out bed. The installation, by Czech artist Jiri Prihoda, is built into a reclaimed railway yard and features an outer shell made of Corralit material, a luminescent substance that absorbs daylight and later glows for about eight hours. While this mini dwelling was installed in a very urban location, the idea is that it would make a tranquil place to stay in the woods or by the sea in more private surroundings.

3. Glow in the Dark Skate Park

This sculptural skate park located on Vassiviere Island in France solves a problem of keeping the surrounding woods natural and free of harsh lighting at night by glowing in the dark. Koo Jeong A and Belgian firm L’Escaut Architecture wanted a ‘dreamlike’ setting for skaters at night that would blend into the environment.

4. Solar Activated Glowing Bike by Pure Fix Cycles

Riding a bike at night can be a bit unsafe. ‘Kilo’, a light-activated glow in the dark bicycle frame from Pure Fix Cycles, fixes that problem with highly reflective paint that can be applied either to the frame or the wheels. In addition to being more visible to oncoming traffic, the glow illuminates the road a bit.

5. Halston’s Glow in the Dark Couture Gown

Call it ‘disaster couture’ - Halson has designed a sequin gown that can help lead the way in case of emergency, or just look really cool at night.

6. Glow in the Dark Road for a ‘Smart Highway’

Glow in the dark paint could help make roads more safe and interactive as part of a ‘Smart Highway’ system developed by designer Daan Roosegaarde. Road lines and signs would be much more visible at night, improving safety, while ‘dynamic paint’ can make things like weather information available at a glance.

7. Gravel that Glows

Glow in the dark gravel illuminates pathways without electricity. These ‘core glow’ stones will shine for 10 hours with just 2 hours of exposure to the sun, even when used underwater. They’re non-toxic, too.

8. Glow in the Dark Plants

A team of researchers raised money on Kickstarter to experiment with glow-in-the-dark plants. The biologically engineered plants are part of a concept about using biology for a more sustainable life, rather than fighting it. Developing them requires gene sequencing with luciferin, the bioluminescent substance seen in fireflies and other insects, plants and animals that glow. The team will start with small household plants and work their way larger.

9. Glow in the Dark Surfing

It’s not clear whether the tech involved in these glow-in-the-dark wetsuits uses conventional glow methods or LED lights, but either way, it’s an intriguing idea. Seventeen surfers trimmed their suits and boards with glow-in-the-dark lighting for a night excursion to Bondi Beach in Australia.

10. Veluna Luminescent Tiles

A new kind of tile called Veluna gathers light during the way and releases it at night in the form of a blue-green glow. It’ll put out an hour of light after just twenty minutes of exposure to sunlight.

11. Full Moon Odyssey Floor Pillow

From Korean design firm i3lab comes the Full Moon Oddyssey, a large-scale floor mattress and pillow with a print of an actual high-resolution photograph of the moon. Both the mattress and the cushion glow at night.

12. Self-Powered Micro-Algae Street Lamp

Algae could be used to produce lighting in both interior and exterior applications, including street lights. French biochemist Pierre Calleja has produced a glass tube light containing microalgae. The process of photosynthesis charges batteries during the day, and at night, the stored power is used for lighting.
