Vanna Bonta, the space traveling author, award-winning poet, and notable inventor of the lovesuit to promote sex in space and other similarly weightless environments, keenly observed that “popularity is not an indication of quality.” Case in point: Pikachu-inspired cars and engagement photos ala The Phantom Menace. We’re now adding over the top interiors to our growing list of unfortunate achievements by pop culture aficionados the world over. From an exact recreation of the Starship Enterprise’s famous flight deck in a London flat to a baby’s nursery inspired by The Dharma Initiative from Lost, click through to check out some of the most bizarre interiors that take obsession to another level entirely.
1. A bachelor pad inspired by Star Trek - London, England

Supertrekkie Tony Alleyne spent ten years painstakingly re-creating the Star Trek Enterprise’s famous flight deck complete with a computerized flight deck, flashing lights, and full scale “transporters.” There’s even a recorded greeting of Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard saying “Welcome to the 24th century” when you ring the doorbell.
The devastating kicker: Alleyne’s wife filed for divorce this year and by court order he has to tear out his labour of love so that she can sell the place as a normal Hinkley flat. Hey, she has apparently been paying the mortgage on the thing for the past 18 years. [More information]
2. A baby’s nursery inspired by Lost - Cascais, Portugal

We’re not even going to pretend to understand the details of the Dharma Initiative, but for all the Lost fans, new parents Monica and Joao created a baby nursery tricked out with everything from bedding branded with the octagonal logo to one of Danielle Rousseau’s maps. 3. Hotel inspired by J-pop - San Francisco, California, USA

Hotel Tomo is a hip anime-themed hotel in the heart of San Francisco’s Japantown featuring J-pop works of art, Giant Robot-curated vending machines, and wall murals by Heisuke Kitazawa in every room.
4. Pizzeria inspired by Andy Warhol - Rishon LeZion, Israel

As their site states, Tel Aviv-based Studio OPA [Pizzeria page] were inspired by “the fact that in association and intuition, pizza is related to the ultimate homeland - America. We let influences from American pop culture take over, and went with them.”
5. Cave house inspired by The Flintstones - Malibu, California, USA

Television legend Dick Clark once lived in the Malibu mansion that looks just like the home of Fred and Wilma from the classic ’60s cartoon. This real-world version of the Flintstones’ home has one bedroom and two bathrooms and a fireplace. Luxe living, cave style. [More information]
6. Home inspired by the movie Up - Herriman, Utah, USA

Bought by two self-described Disney fanatics, this Up-inspired home is almost an exact replica of the animated version in the film. Having fallen in love with the multi-coloured exterior and retro interiors, Clinton and Lynette Hamblin moved from Petaluma, California to Nevada just for this house. Beyond the design, however, the real attraction was how it underscored the overriding theme of the movie. “We just love the message of the movie - adventure is out there,” Lynette Hamblin told The Salt Lake Tribune. This real-life replica of the Simpson’s house was the brilliant grand prize of a Fox and Pepsi-sponsored competition. Sadly, the winner chose a cash-prize instead, and the house was stripped of all its cartoon charm. [More photos]
8. Department store inspired by Alice in Wonderland - Moscow, Russia

Inspired by the many whimsies of Alice in Wonderland, Fredrick Nilsby and Cyril Duva designed four different spaces for the Mood Swings Department Store. Divide by the different types of wishes a fashion-savvy gal might have, the themes range from simple to classic to funny to avant-garde. All through the lens of Miss Alice, of course. 9. Home inspired by Barbie - Malibu, California, USA

The temporary fantasy dream house was designed by one of our favourite designers in honour of the plastic blonde bombshell’s 50th birthday. The 3,500 square foot home features a chandelier made of Barbie hair, a sunburst mirror made from 65 Barbie dolls, and a closet filled with thousands of shoes. A pink Volkswagen New Beetle with a motorized pop-up vanity in the trunk is parked in the garage.
10. A home inspired by LEGO - Paris, France
