Since suitcases got wheels in the 1970s, the portable luggage realm hasn't seen much innovation. Recent inventions, however, promise exciting things for the travellers of tomorrow.

From bags with built-in biometrics to cases with compression technology, we've found nine interesting innovations - including both concepts and real-world products - which could improve how you travel in years to come.

Take a look through our futuristic gallery above. Let us know in the comments below what features and functionality you'd like to see in your suitcase of the future.

The Powerbag briefcase range offers an interesting feature for connected travellers - a built-in battery to recharge your gadgetry on the go. Powerful enough to charge the average smartphone up to four times, the cases come complete with commonly used adapters. Cost: From US$149.

2. Airbus Bag2Go

Next-generation "smart baggage," Bag2Go is digitally-enabled luggage complete with a companion app. The bag lets you scan a QR code for quick communication with airline check-ins. In addition, the bags are fully traceable, letting you locate them at the press of a smartphone button. Although just a concept, the Bag2Go has been developed in conjunction with Airbus, so it could have a real future. Cost: Concept only.

3. Briggs & Riley Cases with CX Compression Packing Technology

Briggs & Riley cases’ CX tech sees an ordinary-looking suitcase expand up to 33% before squishing all the air out of your clothes to compress the case back down to its original size, so it'll fit neatly in the overhead compartment. Cost: From US$399.

4. Hop! The Following Suitcase

New Picture 36

Very much a concept at this early stage, Hop! is a case that follows you around. It contains receivers that triangulate signals from your cell phone to trundle along behind you. Although only in prototype stage, it has received real interest, including a James Dyson Award. Cost: Concept only.

5. Kinetic Energy Case
