SPECTACULAR IMAGES OF AURORA FROM SOLAR STORM - 22-24 JANUARY 2012

One of the products of the solar storm (reported here and here) is also one of the most beautiful and spectacular sights on earth - the aurora. On 22 January 2012, skywatchers in the northern hemisphere were rewarded with amazing displays of aurora, which is a glow or natural light display in the sky seen at polar latitudes or in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions. The cause of these displays was a geomagnetic storm originating from solar activity beginning 19 January 2012, which produced visible aurorae throughout the northern hemisphere. Viewers as far south as northeast England also had great auroral views.

The aurora may not be sighted in our country but alert photographers (or astrophotographers as they are called) from the northern hemisphere were able to capture these wonderful images. Here are selected images of these wonderful lights in the sky over various areas.
