Sweeping aerial shots of cityscapes: not just for people with helicopters anymore. The next version of Google Earth for mobile looks amazing.
Video: New 3D imagery for Google Earth for mobile
Published on Jun 6, 2012 by GoogleSince 2006, we've had textured 3D buildings in Google Earth, and we're excited to announce that we'll begin adding 3D models to entire metropolitan areas to Google Earth on mobile devices in the near future. Thanks to new imagery rendering techniques and computer vision, we're able to create 3D cityscapes, complete with buildings, terrain and even landscaping, from 45-degree aerial imagery.By the end of the year, we aim to have 3D coverage for metropolitan areas with a combined population of 300 million people.
In case you're curious about the subtext here: Apple is expected to drop Google as its maps provider in iOS, replacing it with its own similar 3D mapping service. That's why Google's flexing its geo-muscles right now. (The new Google Earth, as always, will be available for both iOS and Android.)
