Structure Sensor: iPad 3D Scanner That Must Be Seen To Be Believed
By Richard Darell,
Bit Rebels, 24 November 2013.

I am sitting here trying to understand what I have just seen. Believe me, through the years here at Bit Rebels I have seen tons of 3D scanners being presented only to linger in the shadows once their initial hype has faded. I sense this 3D scanner is going to be different though. This one brings a whole new perspective to the table that I don’t think any of us could have ever expected. The Structure Sensor is simply innovation and revolution all bundled into one device.

When I like something, I am always very generous with my words as it comes naturally from my excitement. It’s not always that you stumble over technology that you know is going to fundamentally change the way we do things. The Structure Sensor is not only a device that will capture real-life objects and create them into virtualized 3D representation of them, it is way more than that.

The Structure Sensor can be used on anything and you don’t have to stand still or place an object into a 3D scanner machine. This device is added on to your iPad, and you can literally walk around and scan entire objects or environments down to the smallest detail. Not only does it scan, meaning creating a wireframe mesh out of the things it sees, but it textures it naturally so it looks like a photo-realistic copy of the real thing at the same time. It is a mind-boggling thing to see and to think that it is all possible with a little device added onto your iPad is just an unearthly feeling.

The Structure Sensor is currently being refined and perfected for the consumer market but you can pre-order it over at Occipital, the developer of the device, for the price of US$349.00. Even though I have seen the video [shown at the end] several times already I can’t believe what I have just seen. This device is a beast packaged in a device which you strap on to your iPad, how trippy is that?
