The endless search for power outlets motivates anyone with a smartphone or tablet to seek out new places to charge their devices. And when no power source is readily available, and your devices are running on empty, you probably wish you had a mobile battery of some sort. A new category of laptop bags has you covered, by including a rechargeable external battery that will keep your gear juiced on the go. We’ve rounded up the hottest new styles to help you find the one that best fits your needs.

1. The North Face Router Charged (US$249)

Available in black or yellowish-green, The North Face Router Charged backpack does not come with a router, but it does provide an on-board Joey T1 water-resistant and rugged battery pack. The company claims its embedded power supply will be good for at least two full phone charges, and several days of partial charges, via its USB port. Protectively stored in the backpack, but still removable, the Joey reaches your mobile devices through various ports and pass-through holes in the backpack. It's even smart enough to know when to quit charging your device because it's full. The backpack itself features a checkpoint-friendly laptop/tablet sleeve that will fit a laptop measuring up to 17 inches. The padded and adjustable shoulder straps make it easy for all-day wear, as does the removable sternum strap. Best of all, The North Face offers a lifetime warranty.

2. Timbuk2 Power Q Laptop Backpack (US$199)

Like The North Face backpack, Timbuk2's Power Q sports a Joey T1 power supply for rugged and water-resistant charging. The small charger stows away in a dedicated pocket in the black or blue backpack, providing two full charges on most phones, before needing a recharge. Featuring a swing-around design, the Power Q includes a side access compartment that's big enough to fit a laptop up to 17 inches. It has another dedicated compartment for storing the laptop power cords and accessories, and mesh pockets let you store a water bottle or two for all-day hydration. The Power Q's durable ballistic-nylon exterior should add to your peace of mind as well.

3. JB Powered Laptop Bag (US$258)

Offered by Urban Junket, the JB Powered Laptop Bag is made from 48 reclaimed plastic bottles and contains no lead, nickel or cadmium. Its built-in Joey T1 battery pack offers two full smartphone charges or 10 days of partial charges - enough to keep you powered up all around town. Plus, it stops charging when the battery detects your USB-powered device is full. With dedicated pockets and clever storage to keep everything organized and protected, Urban Junket offers several good-looking and stylish powered bags available in black, blue, green, pink, purple and red. The internal laptop pocket is large enough to house a 17-inch laptop, while separate pockets can hold cords, business cards and files.

4. Tylt Energi+ Backpack (US$200)

With a 10,400mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery on-board, the Tylt Energi+ can fully charge a smartphone four times or fully charge a tablet one time, before needing to be recharged. The Energi+ offers 13 pockets and more than 1,450 cubic inches of storage space - enough to accommodate a laptop up to 15.5 inches and a whole bunch more. Power can be routed to seven storage areas, charging up to three devices simultaneously. The bag itself is water-resistant and features a checkpoint-friendly design. Among this backpack's unique features is the shoulder strap that hides an NFC tag and works with the programmable, free app called Tagstand, which can be set to activate specific settings when your Android phone is stowed in the bag. For instance, you can set it to automatically raise the volume on your ringer and turn off Wi-Fi.

5. Everpurse (US$279)

This bag is stylish and discreetly teched-out. Everpurse offers a stylish leather clutch with a dedicated smartphone pocket that guides the phone right into a built-in charging cradle. We prefer the iridescent-sapphire leather clutch model designed by Laudi Vidni, but you can get a croc-patterned version for US$319. Providing enough power for two full charges, the Everpurse clutch gets recharged by simply being placed on the included charging mat. This petite clutch, just large enough for a few essentials plus your phone, is available for iPhone 4/4s/5/5s/5c or Samsung Galaxy S3/S4, and features a wristlet or a cross-body strap.

  1. many higher end laptops are 90 watt.but they pull less when they are not on the AC. that's why there is a big speed deference when it works on battery power.
