8 Great Tool-Storage Solutions

To work safely and efficiently, it's important to keep your tools organized and accessible. That's often easier said than done, but here are eight tool-storage products that can solve chronic tool-clutter problems.

1. Professional Tilt Car

Price: US$400

Designed for professional mechanics and technicians, the Stack-On Professional Tilt Car provides an easy way to roll tools around the shop or garage and right up to the area where you're working. The steel cabinet features a large interior storage compartment, three 22 1/2-inch-wide tool drawers, and two locking doors. The inside surface of one door has adjustable shelves, while the other door has a perforated pegboard panel for hanging tools and accessories. This heavy-duty unit has a durable epoxy-paint finish, 10-inch-diameter easy-roll wheels, and an extendable handle.

2. Magnetic Storage Panel

Price: US$30 for one, US$50 for two, or US$90 for four

There's no easier way to store hand tools on walls than with magnets. The tools are neatly displayed, out of the way, and easy to retrieve and replace. The problem is that most magnetic tool racks are much too weak and narrow to hold anything but the smallest, lightest tools.

There's a new high-strength magnetic tool system now available called the Magnetic Storage Panel. The magnetized steel panel is 12 inches square and strong enough to securely hold a five-pound cast-iron hand plane. You can customize your magnetic storage area by installing one panel or many panels grouped in any configuration.

3. Power Toolbox

Price: US$58

This cleverly designed product combines a sturdy step stool with a spacious toolbox. That's not even the best part: The Lasko Power Toolbox comes with a cord reel that's equipped with a 20-foot extension cord and four grounded electrical outlets. Plug the extension cord into a wall outlet and then run your power tools right from the toolbox. How great is that? You can even remove the cord reel and use it independently from the toolbox.

The step stool has a nonslip surface and can support up to 300 pounds. There's an easy-access side rack for storing screwdrivers, and beneath the hinged lid are three stacking removable tool trays.

4. Rockler Pack Rack

Price: US$150

Clamps, more than any other tool, are notoriously difficult to store in an orderly manner. And they're virtually impossible to keep in one place. Until now.

The Rockler Pack Rack is a rolling steel-frame storage tower that can accommodate clamps of different sizes, shapes, and styles. From long bar clamps and pipe clamps to spring clamps and hand screws, the Pack Rack stores them all. There are also two shelves that provide convenient places to park glue bottles, hand tools, and other accessories.

5. Mobile Work Centre

Price: US$99

Stacking toolboxes aren't new, but the DeWalt Mobile Work Centre takes the concept to a new level. The three impact-resistant boxes are equipped with a telescopic handle and a pair of all-terrain wheels for superior manoeuvrability. But the really cool part is that the entire unit slides open for easy access to all three toolboxes. The spacious bottom bin can support up to 44 pounds of tools and materials. The middle and top boxes can each support 22 pounds of gear.

6. Professional Steel Workbench

Price: US$240

No workshop or garage is complete without a sturdy workbench, but most workbenches don't have space for storing tools. Here's an exception: The Stack-On Professional Steel Workbench combines a spacious work surface with ample storage space. The bench has a bolt-together steel frame topped by a virtually indestructible 23-inch-deep x 54-inch-long steel top. It also has two deep storage shelves, two steel tool drawers with ball-bearing slides, and a large perforated pegboard panel for hanging hand tools.

7. Build-Your-Own Tool Chest

Price: US$280

H. Gerstner & Sons of Dayton, Ohio, has been building classic wooden tool chests for more than a century. These beautifully made hardwood creations are designed for discerning woodworkers and machinists who want the very best home for their tools - and are willing to spend US$500 for the privilege. Though there's now a more economical way to own a genuine Gerstner tool chest: building it yourself with this easy-to-assemble kit. The Gerstner & Sons Build-It-Yourself Chest Kit includes all the pre-cut solid oak parts, felt lining, and nickel-plated hardware needed to build a classic seven-drawer chest with a fold-down front panel.

8. Open-Top Tool Tote

Price: US$48

The Stanley FatMax Open Tote is designed to protect tools from the dustiest, dirtiest, muddiest job sites. This professional-grade, ruggedly built open-top tool tote is made from puncture-proof, tear-resistant polyester. It has a rubber-gripped steel handle and a hard plastic bottom that repels water. Although this tote only measures about 10 inches wide x 13 inches high x 19 inches long, it can hold a surprising amount of gear. The large interior compartment, lined with 18 divided tool-storage slots, can accommodate large hand tools and small power tools. The tote's exterior is equipped with 11 storage pouches and pockets of various sizes, including ones specifically designed to hold a handsaw, level, and tape measure.
