Travelling isn’t cheap. Even after you’ve paid for your flight, there is still the challenge of finding an affordable hotel. Trying to find the balance between cheap and comfortable is an art in itself, but Swiss-made portable hotel room Hotello might just make our search a lot easier.
Sleeping in an empty building is not often associated with style and class, but Hotello, a portable fold-out hotel room designed by Roberto de Luca and Antonio Scarponi for Swiss office furniture supplier Daskonzept as a showpiece for the Salone Internazionale di Mobile in Milan, might just make a difference.
From the outside, the suitcase on wheels doesn’t look out of the ordinary at all. Even when opened it looks somewhat unconventional, but it does not for a moment give away that there is an entire hotel room in there, which there is. A bed, a desk with stool and a closet of sorts are just the beginning of what this relatively small suitcase hides within its metal body. Assembly is almost IKEA-esque - easy and quick.
The goal of this endeavour is to make use of empty and abandoned buildings all over town and put this wasted space to good use in the form of a pop-up hotel, where everyone brings their own hotel room. An exciting concept to be sure, here’s hoping that the beds are comfortable enough for a good night’s sleep.
