The Quantum of the Seas ship is set to raise the bar on luxury cruises. Considered one of the most modern ships around and weighing 168 tons, this giant is packed with high tech items such as high speed internet, projections and even robots.
The futuristic experience in Quantum of the Seas can begin even before boarding. Royal Caribbean, the company responsible for the ship, lets the costumers check in via internet - which is currently only done for flights - saving time for the passengers. In the cabins there are USB ports and projectors that work as a kind of “virtual tunnel”, displaying the external landscape on monitors in accommodations that have no windows. The “Bionic Bar”, one of the bars in the vessel, allows passengers to make their orders through tablets laid out on the tables and observe a robot-barman mix up the drinks for them. There are also game rooms with access to Xbox Live, a skydiving simulator and a small capsule that rises 90 meters above sea level and offers a 360° view of the sea. You can even catch a wave on board with the surf simulator.
The whole crew has tablets and applications designed specifically for the ship, which has high speed internet in all its extension and a more efficient power consumption. It also has the largest enclosed entertainment centre in any ship in the world. Inside the SeaPlex there is a basketball court, a skating rink, bumper cars and a circus school that teaches the basic movements of a trapeze artist. In one of the presentation salons, cruisers can enjoy a “virtual concert” they play on large screens for the passengers. The Quantum of the Seas has 18 floors and capacity for 4180 people. It starts to cruise November this year and will go through the Caribbean and China in the 2014-2015 season.
