There are so many neat little gizmos and gadgets emerging in the home automation market these days. Technology is moving at a breakneck speed and each year that passes unveils lots of interesting toys. It won’t be long before things like turning on/off the water, adjusting water temperature manually, turning on/off lights, or even worrying about whether or not you have enough milk in the refrigerator become a thing of the past. These processes and more are all going to be automated in the future. Let’s take a sneak peek at some new home automation gadgets on the market.

1. Lockitron

With a name like Lockitron it must be cool, right? I know it takes more than just a name to make one of these gadgets worth purchasing, and this one looks very worth it. You place the Lockitron over your existing deadbolt and it connects to your phone. You can use your phone to lock or unlock the door from anywhere, share the ability to operate the door with friends, and best of all it fits on the inside of the door see you don’t need to worry about somebody messing with it. Anytime the door opens you get a message sent to your phone. Plus this device has Bluetooth so you can simply walk up to the door and it unlocks.

2. Hue

Phillips has begun selling a three pack of LED bulbs and a controller exclusively through Apple stores. This LED bold starter pack allows you to control your lighting remotely using a smartphone. I guess you could say that lighting he room has never been so much fun. These bulbs come with an app and a Wi-Fi receiver allowing full control of brightness, on/off, and colour. It looks like the possibilities don’t end there. Late for work? Program the lights to turn red at specific times to warn you of impending doom. There are more features worth checking out which make this automated lighting solution worthy of our attention.

3. Nest

The makers of the iPod have created another beautifully designed and functional gift for the home dwelling society. It’s called Nest, the prototype thermostat of the future. Nest is like a little artificially intelligent robot that learns your living habits in about one week. This little thing is so smart it can actually feel your presence and know you’re awake. The program is designed in such a way that after answering if you set up questions and tweaking it the little gizmo will perform on its own. As with all of these devices you’ll get device connectivity, Wi-Fi enabled, and remote controllability, but you won’t need those things because Nest will do all that thermostat stuff for you.

4. Ninja Blocks

Gadgets that connect other gadgets together, like a Border Collie herding aimless sheep, are always worth a closer look. Ninja Blocks is one of those Border Collie’s. These are basically handheld, small, and aptly named computers that sense their surroundings and talk to your apps. This company allows you to connect all of your home “things” to the web. Everything you connect to the device talks to your smartphone if you want it. A knock at the door? Get an instant notification via Twitter or Facebook to your phone. Motion detected in your garage? Instant notification to your phone. Build a home security system on your own with these tools. This company has a true DIY spirit and you don’t need to be a “geek” to make this work.

5. Numi Toilet

Beautiful design coupled with tech features make even toilets hot items. The Kohler Numi Toilet is being touted as the world’s most advanced toilet. While that may or may not be true, for anyone who has ever been to Japan knows that they have been innovating toilet technology for the past few decades and have perfected it to an art form. That said, obtaining a Japanese toilet in North America can be next to impossible. Anyway back to the Numi Toilet. This modern looking toilet is extremely water efficient and desperately functional. Some of the highlights from the features list include a motion activated lid, deodorizer, heated seats, foot warmers, and of course music control. Did I mention self-cleaning? That alone might make the price tag worth the purchase, and with all the features built into this high tech toilet I think that even the Japanese will take home a few lessons.
