7 Mighty Machines to Tame Any Lawn
By John Brandon,
Popular Mechanics, 5 June 2013.

Yes, mulching and trimming need to get done, but not all lawn maintenance must be so ordinary. Given a bottomless bank account, we'd be cruising the backyard in a lawn tractor so tall, people would think we'd started farming, or eradicating all traces of the brush pile with a pull-behind chipper.

1. John Deere X739 Signature Series

New Picture 47

Price: US$13,000
Use it for: Cutting your lawn in 20 minutes, not an hour

Sitting 45.9 inches off the ground (or almost 4 feet), this mower gives you a wide survey of your entire lawn. The John Deere X739 lawn tractor is the king of lawn maintenance, with a 25.5-hp engine, a 54-inch cutting deck, and hydraulic power steering. The deck is controlled by a hydrostatic lift for precise levelling. (There are even hydraulic couplets you can use to attach a woodcutter or for controlling a snow blade.) The bigger engine and wide cutting deck mean trimming something else: your mowing time (although you might be sad to spend less time on this rig).

2. NorthStar Brush Chipper

New Picture 48

Price: US$16,000
Use it for: Turning that dead tree into sawdust

Ready to eviscerate some brush? The pull-behind NorthStar Brush Chipper runs on a 35-hp Briggs & Stratton engine. The 12-inch-diameter in-feed supports large logs up to 6 inches in width. The feed rate cranks up to 150 feet per minute, and the discharger can be rotated to any angle. The 2500 psi system pressure means you can load entire shrubs, multiple thin trees, leaves, or anything else that grows in the yard.

3. Honda Rear-Tine Tiller FRC800

New Picture 49

Price: US$2699
Use it for: Transforming a 30-foot patch of lawn into a garden

Many tillers are made for light cultivating in a small garden. Not the Honda FRC800 - this is what you want for destroying a patch of lawn and unearthing dirt. The 12-inch tines dig deep to prepare the soil for planting, and the 20-inch width makes the job faster and easier. The tiller has three forward speeds, plus reverse. It weighs 275 pounds, has a tine speed of 219 rpm, and uses an air filter system that requires less maintenance than others, according to Honda.

4. Craftsman 32cc 4-Cycle Straight Shaft Weedwacker Gas Trimmer

New Picture 50

Price: US$237.49
Use it for: Decapitating weeds at high rpm

Craftsman's beefiest edge trimmer, this pro-grade model features its highest-rated engine size - 32cc - to provide some serious torque. Because it's a four-cycle, you won't waste time mixing gas and oil - and you might not scare as many cats with the piercing engine whine. The Craftsman has perks, including a start system that requires only a quick pull on the start cord to get it going. The handle rotates a full 360 degrees so you can get the perfect grip.

5. 2013 Polaris Brutus UTV

New Picture 51

Price: US$15,199
Use it for: Loading up all the newly created sawdust from the chipper

For serious yard work, you need to go big. The Brutus has a 24-hp diesel engine and a hydrostatic transmission that provides plenty of stump-pulling power and traction. An optional front-mounted mower attachment, which uses power directly from the engine, has a 66-inch cutting width. The Polaris can tow up to a 2000-pound load (say, your camper) and load up to 1250 pounds of debris.

6. Yamaha 700 4x4 Stealth Edition Grizzly

New Picture 52

Price: US$10,099
Use it for: Pulling out a stump with 4x4 power

This powerful ATV has a 686-cc liquid-cooled four-stroke engine. The 700 can tow more than 1300 pounds. For yard work, the front and rear cargo rack can haul mulch bags, flower crates, and bags of debris - up to 99 pounds of it in the front and 187 pounds in the rear. There's also a turf-saving 2WD mode to prevent you from destroying your lawn. The best part: a quick thrill ride each time you bring a bag of leaves out to the front curb.

7. Generac LP5500 Portable Generator

New Picture 53

Price: US$799
Use it for: Powering up a leaf blower for an all-afternoon windstorm

For corded weed and hedge trimmers, chain saws, and electric mowers, nothing beats a portable generator. This 5500-watt model can power just about anything you use in the yard for approximately 5 hours using one 20- or 30-pound propane tank. Head out to the back acreage for some log-splitting fun and still have power left over. There's an easy-to-read dial for priming, starting, and shutting down the generator.
