Trekking outdoors today is a decidedly more high-tech experience than your grandparents remember. That's because our gear is lighter and stronger, crammed with a multitude of functions and capable of doing more than ever. For example, the hottest camp stove on the market has a USB port built right in. Water bottles now come with UV technology to kill microbes before they kill you. And sophisticated watches can tell you much more than the time.

We'll take a look at seven camping gadgets in the slideshow below that'll help make roughing it a little less rough.

1. BioLite CampStove

Can't bear to part from your phone in the backcountry? You don't have to. With the BioLite CampStove, you can keep your gadgets charged. Fuelled off the burning of twigs, pine cones and other biomass, the stove uses that energy to power two things: a fan to improve combustion, and a USB port. Yes, that means you can Instagram away your reprieve from civilization. Price: US$130

2. Garmin Fenix

New Picture (2)

Meet your high-tech trail companion. Fenix from Garmin is an all-in-one computer on your wrist: altimeter, barometer, compass, thermometer, GPS and (of course) watch. Shock resistant and waterproof to 50 meters, Fenix logs time, location and elevation along routes, and stores waypoints, such as trailheads, campsites and other points of interest. A feature called TracBack will guide you back along recorded routes so you can travel off-the-beaten path without worries, except for bears, because you should always be worried about bears. Price: US$400

3. CamelBak AllClear

New Picture (3)

When it comes to remarkable outdoor gadgets, CamelBak AllClear takes the prize. The BPA-free bottle isn't just an answer to plastic bottles in the landfill, it also comes with a special cap with an integrated UV bulb that neutralizes microbiological contaminants from a variety of clear water sources, such as streams, spigots and taps. Having AllClear around means potable water wherever you go, and that means less dying of thirst and/or stomach cramps. Price: US$99

4. NEMO Pressure Shower

A hot shower is certainly a luxury out in the middle of nowhere. NEMO makes it possible with the Helio Pressure Shower. Unlike traditional gravity showers, Helio is simple to set up: fill it with water, lay it on the ground, and pump. There's no need to heavy bag from a tree branch; instead, occasionally tapping the foot pump will maintain pressure. If you leave the filled reservoir out in the sun before heading out for a hike, the water might even be warm by the time you're back. Price: US$100

5. REI Flex Lite Chair

Another piece of luxury for the woods, the REI Flex Lite Chair is fantastically easy to haul around. It weights just one pound 12 ounces, packs down to 14 inches in length by four inches in diameter, and can support up to 250 pounds. Made of tent-like materials, the aluminium legs practically assemble themselves and are equally easy to dismantle. The back support is definitely an upgrade from sitting on a log. Price: US$70

6. Braven BRV-1

If for some strange reason you prefer your music playlist to crickets chirping, Braven has a ruggedized portable speaker for the occasion. The BRV-1 functions both as a speaker and as a battery to charge up your gadgets. Water resistance lets you drag this along your more aquatic adventures worry free, too. Price: US$180

7. Tactical Fire Striker Pen

If you had to survive the wilderness with only a pen, you should hope it's the Tactical Fire Striker Pen. Hidden within its aircraft aluminium casing is a fire striker. As its name implies, you can also use this as a tactical pen, whatever that means. And of course, you can write with it. Price: US$40
