Each year, jurors pour over thousands of design innovations and prototypes entered in the Singapore-based Red Dot Award Design Concept competition. This competition is one of three started by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany. Winners were recently announced at the Red Dot Design Museum in Singapore. Here are 10 we pulled from the Best of the Best in 29 categories.
1. The Copenhagen Wheel
The Copenhagen Wheel was dubbed Luminary, for being the overall winner of the competition. The wheel has a motor, batteries, a computer and a dozen sensors that convert pedal bicycles into electric-hybrids. Over time, the Wheel learns how the rider pedals and adjusts the power assist accordingly. [Red Dot Award page]
2. Inform
The inFORM is an undulating surface that morphs dynamically to render digital information in a tangible, 3-D shape. [Red Dot Award page]
3. Secret Mouth
Secret Mouth provides extra security for door locks with keypad entries. The device is both a door handle and a digital keypad that shields the entry code from view.
4. Retriever
Never drive around aimlessly again looking for a place to park. Retriever is a parking system that works with a smartphone app to help drivers find, book and pay for an open spot.
5. Antenna
Antenna over a new way to control the volume, station, alarm and other control settings on a radio alarm. Instead of pushing buttons, pull, wiggle, twist and turn the lever.
6. Robo Worm
This search and rescue robot has a flexible, accordion-like body that mimics the movements of an earthworm. It can wiggle into tight places not accessible by more rigid robots.
7. Neo Nook
This incubator is specifically designed to assist the breathing of preterm infants. It also comforts the baby with vibrations that simulate the biorhythms of the mother's womb. [Video 1, Video 2]
8. Air Lamp
The Air Lamp does double duty for office workers by providing desktop lighting as well as air purification.
9. Bow Tie Wine Bottle
Sometimes the simplest solutions are right in front of your nose. This innovative concept adds a small bow-tie protrusion to the side of a wine bottle to keep it from rolling side-to-side. Brilliant!
10. Transparent Stapler
Not only does a clear stapler let you see when the staples need replacing, but the guide marks on the outside help the user place the staple in the precise location. This handy gizmo won an Honourable Mention award.
