10 Bizarre Japanese Products You Didn't Know You Wanted
By Chandra Steele,
PC Magazine, 14 October 2014.

Japan is a land of many things, including strange products. The country has a knack for turning out that which is unusual, limited, and found nowhere else.

Where but Japan could you walk into what looks like an ordinary Burger King and purchase an all-black-everything burger made with bamboo charcoal and squid ink in the bun and cheese? And where else could a few empty Amazon boxes become adorable robots?

Of course every day the world is a smaller and smaller place and many Japanese products can actually be shipped to your door. But not everyone knows that and so you can still get a "Where did you get that?" when you whip out your latest Japanese toy. What things will you buy that just scream that you got them from Japan? Nobody needs to know that you didn’t book an expensive ticket and take a trip to Tokyo.

Check out below for a few things that you just must have…

1. Cheetos Never Win

Two great gamer tastes that taste great together are now one. Mountain Dew Cheetos is a delicacy that has not been made available on the shores of Frito-Lay's own nation.

2. Twinglish

This Twitter feed has been turned into an amusing book, dubbed Non-Essential English Vocabulary. It's a way to learn phrases like, "When I saw our manager changed his wig, I felt summer would be over."

3. Stamp Your Feet

Those adorable horizontal emoticons you see are kaomoji, or Japan's version of emoticons. This adjustable stamp lets you put them anywhere.

4. Lego My Label

Don't call them wooden Legos. Probably because Mokulock will get sued. But these wooden bricks that click together are more refined than their playful plastic cousins.

5. I Love It When You Call Me Big Danbo

Danbo has walked straight off the pages of manga and into real life. Big Danbo's eyes light up.

6. Who's Down With Oppai?

If you spend any time at all browsing manga or anime fan sites, you will learn what could be your first Japanese word: oppai. What are oppai? Use the contextual clues in the description for this Super Sonico-themed phone case: "real oppai you can touch," "[for] when you just want to touch (and squish) something other than the front screen of your iPhone," "[g]reat for oppai fans."

7. The Cat's Meow

Hello Kitty doesn't speak but she can help cover up the noise of your own emissions. In the bathroom, that is. This adorable gadget plays the sound of a toilet to cover up any embarrassment you might have while on one.

8. Pets

Your first Tamagotchi has probably long since died from your inattention. That's OK because Tamagotchi 4U revives the electronic pet and has made it more social with NFC. It can now interact with other Tamagotchi and earn its owner points. Pets are expensive and the Tamagotchi is no exception at US$115.

9. Turn the Beat Down

Do you love to karaoke but don't want anyone to hear you? Wait what? There's Noiseless Karaoke Mute Mic 2 so that only you are subjected to your rendition of "Natural Woman."

Did you know that in Japan people use special futon dryers because otherwise futons fill with mites. WHY DID NO ONE TELL US? How long have you had that futon? Throw it out! Buy a new one. And a thousand futon dryers. Buy all the futon dryers.
